Full Job Description

Here at Serco, we are seeking a diligent and experienced Employment Counsel to join our team to provide employment law advice and support, and related risk and compliance in the UK in alignment with the strategic objectives of the HR and Legal functions. In this pivotal role, you will enhance the efficacy and efficiency of legal advice and strategically support for the management and resolution of employment matters in the UK. You will work collaboratively with senior HR colleagues to manage, resolve, and deliver successful outcomes on IR matters and complex/contentious HR and ER matters. You will identify changes and developments in employment law and assess and manage their impact on Serco to provide ongoing assurance of compliance with applicable employment laws.,

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and business partner leading on the delivery of employment law advice, guidance and support and related risk and compliance in the UK business.
  • Develop, enhance, and embed strategies, and in turn support changes to policies, procedures, and ways of working which enhance the efficacy and efficiency of legal advice, and risk management on HR, ER, and IR matters across the UK business.
  • Provide strategic advice and leadership on settlement negotiations and agreements with claimants and their legal representatives in strategic/complex matters.
  • Identify changes and developments in employment law and assess and manage their impact on Serco and provide ongoing assurance of compliance with applicable employment laws within the UK business.
  • Support the triage of non-complex employment claims and matters and act as an escalation point, coach and mentor for Employee Relations Partners managing these claims and matters on a day-to-day basis.
  • Provide proactive advice, support, and guidance to bid and transition teams and to Serco's governance forums on TUPE related matters.
  • Manage relationships with external legal providers and be for the sourcing and provision of quality, cost-effective and value-add advice and support into the HR and Legal teams and wide UK business with responsibility for management, reporting and forecasting of employment related legal costs.
  • Develop and deliver employment law training programmes for the Serco UK&E HR and legal teams and colleagues in the wider business.

    Qualified and experienced employment lawyer with practising certificate and relevant professional qualifications.
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of managing and delivering successful outcomes on employment law matters - contentious and non-contentious.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of current employment law in the UK. Experience of European jurisdictions would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrable experience of balancing commercial, legal, operational and people related aspects to achieve successful outcomes and acceptable risk profiles.
  • Strong commercial acumen and business orientated approach.
  • Experience of implementing and driving change with a mindset of continuous improvement and continually seeking improved and more efficient methods of working.
  • Ability to communicate and build strong relationships across a diverse community of stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to work with changing priorities in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
