Full Job Description

  • Convert customer requirements established by the Product Manager and Product team into product concepts and solutions establishing value targets for all major systems as well as project timing.

  • Through set-based development, select and develop the technologies that will be used in final production being ultimately responsible for the technical success of the products and as such responsible for ensuring that the product development project meets program dates, cost, and quality targets.

  • Mentors and develops the next generation of engineers within the product group; primary interactions include customers, suppliers, product managers, platform chief, component/other industry chief engineers, NPI managers, and other technical members of the product group team.

  • Product design, product and process design, and development or research of products, components, or systems; accountable for other significant activities including Product Reliability and Product Support.

  • Play a significant role as a thought-leader in product strategy, play an active part in workforce planning, and work with customers to determine needs and resolve problems.

  • Understands the business and its impact on technology, customers' businesses and needs, dealing with a global marketplace both in terms of customers and in terms of sourcing suppliers, production, and talent.

  • Have a long range focus on business strategy and planning for technology, product families, and entire major processes and services; planning for future resources and developing capabilities in terms of people, technology and facilities; consciously establishing a culture encouraging innovation, partnering and collaborative relationships and a customer focus

  • Decisions made will affect total product lines, engineering or manufacturing processes, multiple technologies, and both PINS and profitability for the product lines; and impact public perception of Caterpillar, the technology it uses and its applications, warrantees, company strategy and partnerships with universities, research organizations and other external groups, Pending the number of applications, the criteria for the position may be enhanced to facilitate shortlisting. #LI-Hybrid

    Technical degree, with an advanced technical degree desired

  • Significant level of industry experience (internal and external) with clearly demonstrating progressively increasing levels of responsibility

  • Deep technical expertise within engine and engine systems products groups

  • Experience with Industry Product Development System (i.e. APQP, FMEA, etc.)


  • Products and Services: Knowledge of major products and services and product and service groups; ability to apply knowledge of product and service appropriately to diverse situations.

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

  • Influencing Through Expertise: Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.

  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.


  • Top Candidates Will Also:
  • Comprehensive Caterpillar engine system experience

  • Experience with end-customer applications

  • Deep product development and product knowledge

  • External experience and insights into the future energy technologies, paths, and macro trends

  • Understanding and insights relating to the adoption of alternative fuel and integration with electrification

  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across a matrix organization

  • Strategic thinker

  • External work experience across industries or customer bases
