Full Job Description

To provide professional environment and sustainability advice and support to enable the National Functions to manage environment and sustainability risks and opportunities in order to improve performance. This includes managing the relevant assurance and governance processes and supporting the leadership team with the management and implementation of environment and sustainability improvement programmes. The Vacancy is for Various Locations within West Coast South Route This is a secondment opportunity for one year

  • About the role (External) Every day will be different, but you can expect to be involved in the following activities: 1. Deliver expert technical advice on environmental management and sustainability requirements as part of the planning, design and delivery of projects, including Environmental & Social Appraisal and Management Plan, PQQ, ITT, environmental incident investigation, environmental survey commissioning and environmental consents applications. 2. Implement the environment and sustainability aspects of the National Functions strategy, working with all relevant business areas and the supply chain to enable successful delivery. 3. Work with business teams to determine practical and deliverable measures to improve the environmental and sustainability performance on projects. 4. Drive the implementation of best practices through the business teams and the supply chain by capturing and sharing lessons learnt to deliver efficiencies. 5. Manage the Environment team within the National Function. 6. Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, liaising with regulatory bodies and other agencies, developing partnerships with NGOs, working collaboratively with contracting organisations, maintaining effective liaison with other Network Rail Functions and routes, and contributing to the national strategy. 7. Manage the implementation and continuous improvement of the Environment Management System (EMS) within the National Functions through active engagement within the relevant business areas and the supply chain. 8. Manage the delivery and implementation of the environment and sustainability education and training programme for the National Function, supporting staff to understand their responsibilities, and improve technical awareness of environmental aspects. 9. Develop internal and external environment and sustainability communications for the National Function such as cascades, briefings, lessons learnt, case studies, newsletters etc. 10. Build the desired environment and sustainability culture throughout the business unit to achieve continuous improvement and adoption of best practice.

    · Practitioner member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM (or equivalent through experience). · Degree level qualification (minimum UK level 6) in environment / sustainability or other relevant subject (or equivalent through experience). · Demonstrable significant experience in managing environment / sustainability matters, with involvement in construction programmes across multi discipline areas. · In depth understanding of environment / sustainability legislation · Experience in implementing successful environmental / sustainability improvements. · Experience of working with management systems (e.g. ISO or equivalent) · Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a specific emphasis on influencing the views of peers, colleagues and stakeholders. We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be: · Masters level qualification in relevant subject · Full member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM. · Rail industry experience · Auditing competency · Knowledge of Supply Chain Management
