Full Job Description

The Cleaner Neighbourhoods Team delivers street cleansing, bulky household collection service and environmental enforcement across the City, through multiple zonal teams. We want new staff to come into our service with fresh ideas, experiences and skills; to work as part of a team committed to delivering the best environmental service possible. You would be based in one of the citywide zonal teams based in the East or West of Leeds. We operate a 7-day service for the residents of Leeds. This is a shift position working 35 hours per week and includes weekend working. Reporting to a Team Leader, the successful applicant will work as part of a multi-skilled team, working with residents, businesses and Councillors to provide an excellent productive service. The job description and specification will provide you with more detail about the job, but we want people who are:

  • Experience driving a road sweeper would be Ideal but full training will be provided. Our teams work as part of an overall "Team Leeds" approach within the Council. It is important that you can buy into that ethos and play your role in working effectively with Council and other public service colleagues to maintain clean and safe streets and open spaces. We also value the role local communities play in helping keep their neighbourhoods clean and tidy, and you will provide them with help as required; for example, supporting local Litter Free Leeds volunteers with the collection of purple bags they have filled with litter. You will be supported in your role with relevant training and development opportunities. For example, this will include training relating to the manual handling/lifting, use of Road Sweepers and Pathsweepers, handling of hazardous materials and other health and safety issues. You will undertake all work in accordance with health and safety procedures and report defects or safety concerns you identify to the appropriate supervisor/manager. As a front facing representative of the Council, it is particularly important that you are friendly, customer focused and live the Council values., Job purpose To be responsible for providing a safe, efficient and reliable gulley cleansing / road,
  • Drive safely and be responsible for any allocated vehicle.
  • Be responsible for providing a safe, efficient, and reliable service, which includes following any instructions by your Supervisor / Manager
  • Ensure you abide by and work within the values and behaviours expected by the Service and the Council. Be courteous to colleagues and members of the public at all times.
  • Duties will include vehicle checks, required routine maintenance (for example oil and water checks) and cleaning of the cab. You must report any vehicle defects noticed throughout the course of the day.
  • Be responsible for the safe use of the vehicle, oversight of the operational work and safety of self and any attendants.
  • Report any issues to management, using technologies. Be responsible for the correct use of any technology used for recording purposes, including in-cab units and mobile phones, following related procedures. Complete training as expected. Input data in the accepted manner and ensure any issues with technology are reported as soon as possible
  • As trained, be able to drive a variety of vehicles in order to assist other services with driving duties as and when required
  • Ensure delivery of a customer focused Service. Answer queries from the public in a polite manner, using customer care principles.
  • Work in partnership with internal and external partners. Including the back office team, development and contact centre to ensure a high quality service is delivered. Respond in a positive way to queries from Management/other partners.
  • At all times drive safely following the Highway Code and ensure that all relevant Health and Safety regulations are observed and complied with.
  • Attend training courses as necessary and demonstrate a commitment to keeping up to date with skills and knowledge through self-development.
  • Wear protective clothing, boots, gloves, high visibility jackets etc as required by Health and Safety procedures of the Service. Ensure that requests for new equipment are done where essential and in a timely manner.
  • Report suggestions for improvements to your Supervisor/Manager to help improve the delivery of a more efficient and quality service. Adopt a One Council approach.
  • Work with colleagues as part of a Team for Leeds.
  • Be available for overtime and comply with the overtime protocol.
  • Follow disposal point rules when tipping off or discharging the vehicle - this includes going to the allocated sites for tipping off or alternatives as directed.

  • Be prepared to be flexible and adaptable to change. For example be willing to be trained and available to undertake such as gritting duties when service shut down, e.g. snow days.
  • The duties outlined are not meant as an exhaustive list and will also comprise any other duties within the spirit of the post commensurate with the job evaluation outcome for this post. This post is paid at B3 due to market supplements which will be reviewed each year., Your shift pattern (known as a 4x3 shift) is:
  • Week 1 - Monday, Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday Week 2 - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Your hours of work will average 35 hours per week on the above shift pattern which will be agreed locally dependant on service needs. Your working day will be 10.5 hours between 06.00 and 17.30 (inclusive of a 30 minute unpaid lunch break and other comfort breaks as reasonably required). You will be required to work any bank holidays for which you are rostered (excluding Christmas Day Boxing Day and New Year's Day). This is a requirement of the post and is factored into your additional leave entitlement and therefore no further payments or time in lieu will be applicable for those days. There will be occasions when the hours of work need to be varied, for example to start and finish later in order to assist with clean up of a major event. You may also be occasionally required to switch days to assist with the needs of the service, for example to cover for another member of staff. A reasonable period of notice will always be provided. There may be an occasional requirement for additional hours to be worked, through planned overtime, which will be recompensed in accordance with NJC for Local Government Service Terms and Conditions as adopted or amended by the Council or local agreement. A reasonable period of notice will always be provided. There may also be occasions where you could be called upon at short notice and in exceptional circumstances to provide a proportionate response to an emergency situation out of office hours, if you are able to do so. In these situations the Council has the discretion to pay an allowance in accordance with the time worked, or apply an inclusive rate of pay to take into account all features of the job.,

    LGV Licence Class C (equivalent to HGV Class 2). Subject to passing driver assessment, Ability to understand verbal and written instructions and follow daily work patterns
