Job Title: Environmental Health Officer - Food Safety/ Food Safety Enforcement Officer Temporary)

JOB PURPOSE

1. To contribute to achieving the Council's Vision by providing a comprehensive Food Safety in accordance with Service Development Plans, performance targets, legislation and the Council's service standards and policies. Note: This temporary post is to cover current sickness absence in the Food Safety Team and provide short term additional resource to help achieve the team's inspection targets.

2. To work jointly with others, within the team, the Council and with other organisations, in order to find co-operative and creative solutions to environmental health problems that deliver best practice and value for money, and to develop the contribution of environmental health to the achievement of the Council's Vision.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

1. Maintain an awareness of and comply with the service standards, performance and quality management arrangements of the service, and meet personal targets as a contribution to their achievement.

2. Foster an innovative and open environment within the service, where employees feel supported, involved and consulted.

3. Show flexibility in responding to and delivering change, and make use of the technology available to deliver and improve services.

5. Work in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974, and related Council policies and procedures, and encourage others to do so.

6. Undertake personal development and learning related to the duties of the job and changes affecting the job.

7. Undertake research and consultation, and report findings, on Environmental Health and related matters.

MAIN ACTIVITIES (Service Related)

1. Carry out a range of Food Safety inspections, investigations, audits and other procedures and methods, using education, advice and enforcement techniques, to achieve legal compliance, customer satisfaction, and service and quality standards.

2. Liaise, advise, negotiate and work jointly with a wide range of people and organisations to achieve solutions to Environmental Health and related problems.

3. Demonstrate initiative, personal responsibility, flexibility and a desire to learn in performing the duties of the post.

4. Any other duties as required which are commensurate with the purpose and grading of the post.

Substantial recent experience working as an Environmental Health Officer in the field of food safety or a Food Safety Enforcement Officer within a local authority Environmental Health department, Degree or diploma in Environmental Health, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health
A recognised food safety qualification will be considered
Possesses EHRB registration

Written and verbal skills/abilities to achieve desired outcomes with a variety of target groups (business proprietors, managers, supervisors, employees, the public)

Extensive understanding of technical and legal aspects of food safety

Ability to prioritise and deliver a busy and varied workload of both planned and reactive work in accordance with an established performance framework

Competency in the use of MS Office suite

Use of Civica APP (Flare) software, in relation to Environmental Health, Self-motivated, well organised and capable of working under minimal supervision

Demonstrate ability to play a supportive and effective part in team activities

Innovative in finding new solutions and approaches to work issues, Willingness to work unsociable hours

Ability to travel widely, either by having a current driving licence and providing a car or by having access to appropriate alternative means of transport

All candidates must posses the baseline qualification for Food Law regulation and have recent experience doing food business inspection - EHRB registration

(HCC) A comprehensive understanding of relevant legislation and national policy.

(HCC) A detailed specialist knowledge of the legislation relating to the activities of the Environmental Regulation Section and a knowledge and understanding of the legislation applicable to Health & Safety, Food Safety, Infectious Disease Control and Housing, including Regulations, Statutory Instruments, Technical Guidance, Codes of Practice, Industry Guides, Government Circulars, British Standards.
