Full Job Description

As part of a specialist team, provide Environmental Management and Sustainability advice and skills to defence-related clients and internal QinetiQ clients to enable improved sustainability outcomes of UK MOD equipment and services through their lifecycle This role encompasses the provision of environmental and sustainability-related advice and the delivery of documentation or artefacts in support of projects to our clients. Support to projects will range extensively from sustainable procurement and environmental management advice on new defence procurements, assessment and mitigation of already in-service equipment and disposal support. Within the business, there will be opportunities to provide expertise on development of new products, to develop the sustainability appraisal requirements of QinetiQ trials at UK ranges and working with internal teams to advance our own Net Zero targets. The successful candidate may need to travel within the UK to meet customer and internal business needs, as well as adapting to different customer cultures. We are particularly keen to find candidates with strong skills in one of the following:

  • Understanding and application of product environmental legal compliance, specifically relating to Hazardous Substances and Restricted Materials management through-out the product lifecycle.
  • Development of Sustainability and Net Zero management plans and tools.
  • This role specifically includes an independent element for approximately 50%-75% of the time, working closely with TacSys teams in Defence Digital. Duties of this role include working alongside the customer to:
  • Develop and deliver compliant Environmental management Systems documentation and artefacts in support of the TacSys projects.
  • Support the environmental elements of Hazardous Substances and Restricted Materials registers and management.
  • Facilitation of Environmental Working Groups, Hazardous Materials Working Groups and Disposals Working Groups
  • Provide environmental and sustainability-related advice to the TacSys customer
  • Attend and provision of briefings at Safety and Environmental Commitees and Panels as required
  • Develop the TacSys Sustainable Procurement Tool to meet MOD Policy requirements
  • Other ad hoc requirements, Work with internal and external stakeholders to develop specified Environmental Management and Sustainability solutions and artefacts. Ensure they meet the project's outlined requirements and standards as per QinetiQ policy.
  • Support production of delivery plans with programme managers and customers.
  • Ensure that work tasks are delivered to the specified time, cost, required quality standards and any other specifications given.
  • Support solution development to problems that are defensible, auditable and which will meet customers' expectations and needs.
  • Provide support to time estimates for inputs to bids.
  • Ensure that all work performed is consistent with QinetiQ procedures.
  • Be flexible to work on a variety of different projects.
  • Application of environmental management theories, concepts, practices and principles to resolve technical and performance issues for a platform, product or service

    Ability to work as part of a team, to ask questions and develop solutions.
  • Understanding of general Environmental Management Systems, based on ISO14001
  • Be able to undertake basic environmental aspects and impacts identification, screening and scoping.
  • Analytical and logical thinking skills consistent with those associated with the successful completion of a degree in mathematics, science or technology; also, the job holder must have conceptual flexibility and be able to think in an integrated/holistic /systematic manner.
  • Good judgement for reliably identifying and managing risks/impacts, and also for selecting the most appropriate solution from a range of options.
  • Knowledge of UK environmental legal frameworks and application of legal requirements, such as ROHS and REACH during product development and through-life management.
  • Understanding of Sustainability concepts and knowledge of Sustainable Development Goals
  • Technical and analytical skills to produce the documentation and deliverables required, normally using MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:
  • Understanding of working with DE&S stakeholders and processes (ASEMS / POEMS / DEF STAN 00-051 / JSP418).
  • Ability to provide evidence for environmental legislation compliance.
  • Development of Sustainability assessment tools and understanding of the requirements of sustainable procurement.
  • Hazardous materials management to meet legal requirements.
  • Net Zero planning.
  • Carbon footprinting.
  • Auditing either as part of a team, or as lead auditor.
  • This role encompasses all defence domains (air, land, maritime, weapons); familiarity with one of these domains would be desirable but is not essential.
