Full Job Description

The University is looking to appoint a full-time Finance Manager. Candidates must have experience of supporting the finance and HR functions within a busy, small office environment. This hands-on role is located in central London, and works in the three person Finance and HR Department, reporting to the Assistant, Director of Finance & Administration.

Responsibilities cover a range of accounting, HR & administrative duties, including:

  • Control and Maintain the Purchase Ledger, Nominal Ledger, Multiple Bank Accounts, Credit Card Accounts & Petty Cash.

  • Process financial transactions, including invoices, expense reports, deposits, BACS payments and purchase orders, and track information using financial databases.

  • Support in the management of the office's monthly payroll process.

  • Monitor Project expenditure

  • Month End Reconciliations & Analysis

  • Accounts to Trial Balance

  • Update monthly cashflow forecast

  • Prepare Monthly Report for submission in line with monthly deadlines

  • Support monthly review and reconciliation of the programme's financial reports ensuring expenses are compliant with BU financial and operational policies.

  • Assist the Assistant Director, Finance and Administration and the Director of the Programme with Budgets

  • Assist the Associate Director of HR with administration of HR processes including, contracts, MIS, hiring, RTW checks.

  • Work closely with all departments including staff, faculty, vendors and students.

  • Providing support in the absence of the Assistant Director, Finance and Administration


  • The duties and responsibilities set out above are not exhaustive and may be changed or added to in the light of subsequent developments and the best interests of the University. The Finance Manager will work with Senior Management and other members of staff on a regular basis.

  • Relevant knowledge of accounting, finance and HR software packages would be desirable

  • Advanced Excel

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills necessary to manage multiple and competing demands at once

  • The ability to work well under pressure, with a calm and professional manner

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with a range of users, from students to faculty and staff

  • Discretion and confidentiality due to the nature of the work

  • The ability to influence and advise more senior staff to meet required procedures and standards

  • A flexible, proactive and responsive outlook

  • Excellent team working skills

  • Previous professional experience in a finance/accounting role at a university or in education is desirable


  • Qualifications / experience
  • Ideally, candidates should have or being working towards a financial qualification (AAT/Part Qualified ACCA/CIMA).


  • Candidates must have the unrestricted right to work in the UK. This is a full-time role with some flexibility on remote work (generally up to once/week).
