Full Job Description

We are a dynamic team recognised worldwide as a technical leader in commercial fuel systems, responsible for the end-to-end development of the fuel system of all our aircraft, including:

  • Architecture;

  • Design;

  • Aircraft Integration;

  • Certification;

  • In-Service Support.

  • The Fuel & Inerting System presents many technical and business challenges that need to be understood and managed. It operates in a very hostile environment at extremes of both temperature and humidity, with the added challenge of safety being our number one priority due to the volatile nature of jet & Hydrogen-based fuels. As an engineer within the team, understanding these topics and issues will be the focus of your time here.

    What you will be doing:

    From the moment you join, you will be an integral part of the Fluid Mechanical department, within the Fuel & Inerting Domain.

    The Fuel & Inerting teams are responsible for the design of the complete fuel system across every commercial Airbus aircraft, at all stages of the development lifecycle. From R&T projects (such as ZEROe and the next generation of Airbus aircraft) to supporting the Flight Test campaigns of A321XLR and A350ULR, you can expect to be contributing to meaningful work across our entire fleet. The Fluid Mechanical department specifically is responsible for the physical flow of the fuel through the system. This is essentially ensuring the correct pressure, flow and physical state of the fuel. This is accomplished through designing the architecture of the system, specifying the pipework required, specifying the fluid mechanical equipment (valves, pumps, etc) in the system and testing all along the way from component level up to aircraft flight testing.

    The philosophy of the Fuel & Inerting Systems Domain is to have the best systems, people and partnerships. Over time as an Intern, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills as an Engineer, ultimately helping you to realise your potential.

    We are in the middle of an exciting time in our industry, with a focus very much on environmentally sustainable aviation. The work you will complete with us will not be limited to traditional kerosene-based fuel systems, but also to new and novel technologies; the design of current and future Airbus fuel systems for our next generation of aircraft and the impact that novel fuels such as Hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel will have on these systems is of high importance and interest to enable Airbus to lead aviation into the future.

    As one of our interns, you will operate in a challenging environment, where you will be given a real and valued role in the Fluid Mechanical team within Fuel & Inerting Systems. Our team operates in the following areas of expertise:
  • Computer-based engineering (software, modelling);

  • Fluid-mechanical and Inerting System Design;

  • Hydrogen Fuel System Development;

  • Fuel Chemistry.

  • The typical tasks of the Fluid Mechanical teams can involve trades of architecture choices for the fuel system, weighing up options for the best compromise solution for the overall aircraft. Equipment is an important part of the system providing the main functions of the fuel system and ensuring a reliable product for our customers. Improvements, studies of new technologies and ongoing airworthiness activities for the system equipment is a key task for the teams. Developing and running simulations of the fuel systems and fluid flows is a core activity ranging from detailed models to fuel system level models. The core engineering activity is understanding the physics and implementing equations representing those physics to model the system behaviour to predict and design. In the Fuel Sciences team the activities focus on the fuel properties ensuring a consistent fuel is available at airports and that our aircraft are capable of receiving new or changing fuels.
    All of the teams work collaboratively within Fuel Systems, with other teams across Airbus and outside Airbus to make our large, complex aircraft products a success.

    Personal well being is one of our highest priorities, as is the way we act as engineers. You will have the flexibility to tailor your year according to what interests and what inspires you, while developing your knowledge of our systems and aircraft. You will have the opportunity to have varied placements working with experienced teams in the above areas, but it would be appreciated if you could propose the area that interests you the most when applying via your cover letter.

  • Studying towards a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Systems Modelling, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent;

  • Naturally excited to work in the aviation industry, to explore engineering principles and create solutions based on technical intuition and evidence;

  • Curious to learn new skills and look at things in different ways;

  • Have the ability to act with integrity and to speak up when necessary;

  • A team player with the ability to work with others in an open, collaborative style;

  • Proficient in oral and written communication styles;

  • Understand and appreciate the future of aviation - specifically the impact new fuels and technologies can have on the Fuel & Inerting System design., This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company's success, reputation and sustainable growth.

    There has never been a more exciting time to join the Fuel & Inerting Systems team in Airbus! Along with our commitment to continually improve and support our current aircraft and to make game-changing headway with our revolutionary new fleet - such as the A321XLR & A350ULR - we are breaking boundaries with our exciting new ZEROe Hydrogen-fueled aircraft plans and paving the way for 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel use on our aircraft to reduce our environmental footprint. As part of our close-knit team, you will be at the forefront of these developments.

  • If this intrigues you, then come and join us at the forefront of Airbus' sustainability vision and you will have the chance to contribute to where Airbus goes next. We value collaboration, trust and open-mindedness and are looking for similar like-minded engineers to join us and help us lead the way into the future., Airbus is committed to achieving workforce diversity and creating an inclusive working environment. We welcome all applications irrespective of social and cultural background, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation or religious belief.

    Airbus is, and always has been, committed to equal opportunities for all. As such, we will never ask for any type of monetary exchange in the frame of a recruitment process. Any impersonation of Airbus to do so should be reported to emsom@airbus.com.

    At Airbus, we support you to work, connect and collaborate more easily and flexibly. Wherever possible, we foster flexible working arrangements to stimulate innovative thinking.
