This role is a permanent position within the University's Operations Directorate, offering flexibility to work any five days within a working week, including some evenings, in alignment with business requirements. The primary responsibility involves overseeing the food and beverage service operations and teams across the College, broadly encompassing banqueting, buffets and the college bar. Our college bars are developmental spaces and the hub of the college community. They are used by our students as a place to study, work on group projects, and enjoy a broad range of events, both academic related and social. Banqueting and buffets are generally provided to build college community, some are informal, others are formal college dinners that follow the plated banquet service format. The Colleges Operations Directorate forms part of the Colleges and Student Experience Division, which is responsible for providing a world class student experience to our diverse student community. The Colleges Operations Directorate plays an integral role in providing excellent services and facilities to support the personal development of students. The services provided by the Directorate include catering, housekeeping and reception. The Role You will be working part of a team to provide students, colleagues, and guests with a courteous, professional, friendly and efficient catering service. Effectively supervise the team to ensure excellent customer service and to lead by example, demonstrating excellent teamwork and the ability to appropriately delegating tasks and responsibility to team members and follow instruction. Working as part of the catering team you will ensure that food service and dining areas are set up to an exceptional standard and remain clean, tidy and a safe working environment. Washing up is completed as part of the role, this will include the use of an automatic dishwasher, and after service, all food areas are cleared and cleaned. Working in a catering environment requires an element of physical manual handling which can include lifting and transporting food and catering equipment, including heavy plates and cutlery., We prefer to receive applications online.   • Manage budgets and expenditure including buying (and returning) goods and services.
  • Team Development
  • Supervise team members and manage any other people/resources that are assigned to you and provide an initial response to any related HR issues.
  • Explain systems and procedures to induct new starters into the team and provide specialist advice and guidance including any training (including customer service excellence).
  • Contribute to performance review processes by providing feedback on individual and team objectives and expectations and considering any development needs.
  • Communication/Liaison
  • Develop and improve services by taking part in meetings, working groups and committees.
  • Liaise with other service areas to ensure the most diverse and accessible delivery and promotion of projects, events and initiatives.
  • Create good working relationships, including internal and external networks which allow you to increase your knowledge and skills, while swapping information with peers.
  • Act as a key point of contact between the University and internal and external stakeholders, including donors and employers.
  • Build relationships with contractors and third-party suppliers to share good practice, exchange information and work together on joint initiatives.
  • Contribute to internal and external presentations and public relations events promoting the Durham University reputation and encouraging participation and income generation.

College of St Hild and St Bede is located at Rushford Court, it houses over 300 undergraduate and postgraduate self-catered students.

    We will require you to be punctual, flexible, and willing to work variable shift patterns, including evenings and weekends. Example of the shifts are breakfast/lunch 7.30am-3pm, lunch 10am-3pm and dinner 4.30pm-8pm with on occasion finishing at 10pm if there is a function taking place.
