Frame Conservator

This role is based within the Frame Conservation team at the museum's Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre (PPMCC). Reporting to the Frame Conservation Manager, the Frame Conservator contributes to the day-to-day operation of the Frame Conservation studio and works closely with the Painting Conservation team towards shared goals and deadlines.
The post holder will undertake conservation treatment and preservation of the National Maritime Museum collection of historic frames, in accordance with conservation professional standards and ethical guidelines for the purposes of display, loan, public engagement and condition need.
Responsibilities include surface and structural conservation treatment of carved and gilded, moulded composition, veneered and polished wood frames from the National Maritime collection to a high professional standard, including carrying out preventive conservation framing and glazing of oil paintings for display and loan. They post-holder will maintain accurate conservation records and documentation of condition and treatment in accordance with conservation professional standards and departmental procedures.

The successful candidate will have a recognised professional qualification or equivalent experience in the conservation of historic picture frames. They will have developed their depth of knowledge and practical experience over several years of professional practice. They will have experience of a range of structural and surface treatments to historic picture frames, as well as experience of preventive conservation framing, including the design and fitting of build-ups, slips, backboards and the specification of glazing.
They will have practical experience in the use of woodworking machinery and specialised hand tools for woodworking and wood carving. They will have an understanding of COSHH requirements for conservation, as well as an organised and flexible approach to work, good organisational skills and have good computer skills.

This is a permanent, full-time role in Band 5 - Management and Proficient Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management.

Salary: £36,900 per annum
