Full Job Description

This role will be suitable for a self-starter, comfortable working predominantly individually, but also on projects or collaboratively within a team, and someone who can demonstrate strong organisational skills to manage the requirements of multiple funds simultaneously.

As you will be working closely with the Investment Management teams you will need to be adaptable, demonstrate strong technical skills and be ready to manage a wide range of stakeholder relationships.

The team:

This role sits within the Ventures & Small Companies Finance team responsible for the provision of finance services across Venture Capital Trusts ("VCT") and a suite of institutional funds. You will also be part of a wider Finance function that is a diverse team of c.50 that operates across various business areas and specialisms

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Fund Accountant will take full ownership of finance and reporting for a number of private funds, building a thorough knowledge of the funds assigned to them and becoming a key point of contact for stakeholders including investment teams, the legal and governance team, and the relevant boards.

What will you be doing?

Commercial

  • Developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of assigned funds and a strong working knowledge of their portfolios, including assisting with the set-up of new funds as required. Assigned funds include a suite of private funds with follow-on investments from Titan VCT and a pre-seed fund investing in early-stage companies who are raising their first external funding round.

  • Maintaining good working relationships with the investment managers, investment operations, legal and governance and other teams both within Octopus and externally, ensuring that Finance play a leading role in ensuring the seamless management of the funds.

  • Have a thorough understanding of the GP/LP structure, associated waterfalls and carry calculations, and keep up to date with changes to tax law and industry legislation.

  • Reporting
  • Maintaining accurate books and records for the funds at all times (financial records fully updated and reconciled monthly/quarterly) consistent with group processes and controls, managing the relationship with the fund administrators ensuring timetables are clear and that they deliver excellent service to our fund, reviewing work as necessary.

  • Analytically consider financial results on a monthly or quarterly basis and assess whether results indicate any potential issues in the portfolio, and flag these as required to the Financial Controller.

  • Own the complete regulatory reporting cycle for assigned funds, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality statutory reports, including annual and interim accounts filings, HMRC reporting (Partnership returns, FATCA/CRS filing) and US tax reporting (K1s). Completing regulatory FCA reporting as required for the funds.

  • Preparing quarterly finance reports for the Board pack.

  • Outside of the above this role will involve reviewing existing processes to confidently suggest and implement improvements that drive efficiency, including taking a lead on the delivery of automation of information to reduce the reliance on spreadsheets and manual inputs, for both internal and external data requests.

    Ideally, you'll have:

An accountancy qualification (ACA/ACCA or equivalent)

A good working knowledge of how funds work and operate.

Proven track record of delivering results.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience in confidently presenting and communicating financial information in a straightforward manner.
