Full Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role. The Sociology Department at Manchester Met is looking for 1 researcher for the URTOPIA project. The project aims to introduction gamification methods into the learning module for quantitative methods (known as 'Working with Quantitative Evidence' WQE), a crucial component of the undergraduate sociology programme. Recognising the challenges students often face in engaging with this complex subject, the department seeks to leverage gamification as a strategy to make learning quantitative methods more interactive, enjoyable and conducive to long-term retention whilst tackling equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) issues. The department is committed to fostering innovative and effective teaching methodologies to enhance the learning experience for undergraduate students. Project brief: Aim: The primary goal is to enhance student engagement and understanding of quantitative methods within the sociology curriculum. Objectives:

  • Increase engagement: Implement gamified features to boost student participation and motivation in the quantitative methods module.
  • Long-term retention: Enhance knowledge retention by incorporating gamified elements that encourage continuous and self-directed learning.
  • EDI: Develop gamified content that consciously addresses EDI principles, sensitive to 'awarding gaps' and diverse perspectives and experiences within the module.

    Second or third year student currently studying in the department of Sociology
  • Creativity: Demonstrates the ability to generate innovative ideas and approaches to enhance the learning experience through gamification.
  • Communication: Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas clearly and collaborate within a team environment.
  • Adaptability: Displays adaptability and a willingness to learn, recognising this internship as a developmental opportunity to enhance existing skills and acquire new ones.
  • Interest and Initiative: Shows a genuine interest in the intersection of education, technology, and gamification, coupled with a proactive attitude towards taking initiative in project tasks.
  • Time Management: Exhibits strong time management skills, capable of balancing academic commitments and the demands of the internship effectively.
