Full Job Description

The Gardener will assist the Gardens Team in providing a beautiful environment for pupils and staff to enjoy. The Garden Team is responsible for maintaining and developing the three school sites as well as residential properties.,

  • Lawn care;

  • Tree and shrub maintenance;

  • Monitoring the health of all plants and greenspaces;

  • Maintain herbaceous & mixed borders;

  • Weeding, feeding and irrigation., This role will involve daily contact with pupils, and you will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.

  • All staff and volunteers have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.


  • Hours of Work:
  • You will be required to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday inclusive 7:45am - 4:15pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

  • Occasional weekend work will be required to support College Open Mornings and Events.

    We are looking for a knowledgeable, qualified and hard-working Gardener to join our team at Brighton College.


  • The successful candidate will be passionate and motivated in their work and able to work confidently alone and within a team.

    We are passionate about working sustainably and are continuously looking at ways to improve in this area. We expect work to be carried out to high standard, with an awareness of health and safety, as well as being mindful that we are in a school environment.,
  • RHS level 2 or equivalent qualification;

  • A valid driving license;

  • A love of working outdoors;

  • Experience using a wide range of horticultural machinery and powered hand tools;

  • Strong manual skills;

  • Creativity and an eye for detail;

  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team;

  • Experience of identifying pests and diseases;

  • Eagerness to learn and improve;

  • Experience working at a high profile garden - Desirable.
