Full Job Description

Job title - General Instructor in Learning and Development (Apprenticeship and Development Programmes) Job Advert text The starting salary for this role is £44,911 per annum plus 10%, working 42 hours per week. An opportunity has arisen to join the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service's (SFRS) Learning and Development department as one of our 18 'General Instructors' on a permanent basis. (For internal candidates, a secondment can be considered). This role will predominately support our Apprenticeship and Development Programmes, but also helps to deliver and support other operational training we offer in-house too. Other subjects that the post-holder can be involved in include Initial Firefighter Training (recruits), Specialist Rescue, Incident Command, IECR and L&D Projects. Training and support can be provided to obtain instructing licenses should these not be held. The post-holder should expect to support the delivery of our Live Fire training in some capacity. Who can apply? Applicants must hold competency in response firefighting. All General Instructors are expected to hold an Instructing and Teaching qualification (e.g. AET/PTLLS), and an Assessor qualification (e.g. CAVA/A1). For internal candidates, support can be provided to obtain these in role. Job Introduction As a General Instructor at SFRS you will become, if not already, a multi-skilled Instructor delivering on a range of specialisms. You will lead on one area of training, where you will be responsible for the coordination, research, development, and delivery of all learning materials for your subject area, including providing assurance on the quality of delivery. For this role, it is the Apprenticeship and Development Programmes which covers the apprenticeship and our supervisory development programmes. The role is paid at Watch Command B (WCB) rate if you are a competent WC or have successfully achieved an Instructor, Assessing and Teaching Qualification. Prior to this, the role will be paid at Watch Commander Development rate. As this role is of an operational nature, working in line with nationally agreed conditions, there is a need for General Instructors to be flexible where required for some evening and weekend working. However, most of our delivery is Monday-Friday between 9 and 5pm. Due to the need for flexibility in the role, an additional 10% pay enhancement is provided. General Instructors are expected to maintain competence in operational duties by riding across any of SFRS's Fire Stations at least once per month. For those that are undertaking their own rank development or wish to, support to achieve this whilst in a training environment can be facilitated. The appointment is subject to satisfactory references, a standard DBS clearance, a fitness test, medical clearance via Occupational Health, and evidence of required qualifications. Application If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please include the following as part of your online application:

  • A summary of your career (this can be provided separately as a CV or any other format). Please ensure any relevant qualifications are clearly evidenced. This includes any instructing, teaching, or assessor qualifications.
  • A short summary of why you would like to join the SFRS L&D department (300 words maximum).
  • Subjects alongside Apprenticeship and Development Programmes that you are passionate about delivering or have an interest in becoming an instructor in.
  • Selection Process The selection process will be hold on Tuesday 29th October 2024 at Wray Park Training Centre, Reigate, RH2 0EJ and involve the following assessments:

  • A competency-based interview, which will also look to evidence your commitment to the Core Code of Ethics., At Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, we believe it is essential to embed our commitment to the Core Code of Ethics and particularly equality, diversity, and inclusion, into every aspect of our work. This is a dual responsibility applying both to our outward facing, community-focused activities, and to our internal responsibilities to people and volunteers.

  • Putting our communities first
  • Integrity
  • Dignity and respect
  • Leadership
  • Equality, diversity, and inclusion
