Full Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced operational manager to lead, manage, and develop the operational aspects of the Emergency Department. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of emergency care, improving patient flow, managing resources, and supporting a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. Working closely with clinical and operational leaders, you will play a crucial role in enhancing patient outcomes, optimising service performance, and upholding the highest standards of patient care and safety. Main duties of the job

  • Operational Management : Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring optimal staffing, resource allocation, and adherence to performance targets.
  • Team Leadership : Lead, motivate, and support a multidisciplinary team, fostering a positive, collaborative, and patient-centred culture.
  • Performance Monitoring : Regularly monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to patient flow, quality of care, and service efficiency, implementing improvements as required.
  • Quality and Safety : Ensure that all care provided meets regulatory standards and aligns with best practices in emergency medicine, prioritising patient safety and quality of care.
  • Financial Management : Manage the department's budget effectively, identifying areas for cost-saving and ensuring financial sustainability.
  • Stakeholder Engagement : Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including NHS partners, to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of emergency care services.

  • Education to degree level or equivalent qualification and or experience
  • Postgraduate management diploma or equivalent in- depth knowledge in a number of management disciplines acquired through training and experience to degree level or equivalent
  • Experience Essential
  • Proven experience of managing a significant service budget
  • Up-to-date knowledge of NHS system reform policy and other key policy drivers. (Performance Management, Operating Framework, capacity planning, payment by results, independent sector development and Foundation Trust issues)
  • Experience of managing people and teams
  • Experience in developing creative solutions to problems
  • Knowledge Essential
  • Knowledge of current NHS initiatives and development related to specialty
  • Knowledge of key performance measures / indicators
  • Knowledge of patient data systems

  • In line with established NHS management competencies, demonstrate the ability to prioritise, organise and carry out own work effectively and within agreed timescales and deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and the wider MDT

  • In managing others, has an approach which is both inclusive and developmental
