Full Job Description

We are offering a nine month fixed term post for a General Practitioner to work in our Wednesday Lipid Clinic alongside consultants, registrars, dietitians and specialist nurses in the Lipid Clinic at Bristol Royal Infirmary. The Clinic provides services to patients throughout the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire area and has a track record of maintaining close links with primary care

Main duties of the job

The clinical responsibilities of the post include the following:
To contribute to the outpatient clinical service for the diagnosis and management of patients with lipid disorders, as an integral part of the clinical teamTo communicate and liaise with primary care colleagues around shared patient care and identification of individual patients and families with previously undiagnosed familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH)To work with the FH Nurse Specialist to ensure appropriate cascade screening of the relatives of patients with FH.To work closely with the Clinical Biochemistry laboratory service to organise specialist lipid investigations required by clinic patientsTo work with patients to formulate appropriate clinical management plans

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. General

1.1. In conjunction with colleagues, to provide an outpatient clinical service for the diagnosis and management of patients with disorders of lipid metabolism.

1.2. Communication and liaison with primary care clinicians around shared patient care and identification of individual patients and families with previously undiagnosed FH.

1.3. Communication with relevant clinical specialties including cardiology

1.4. To work with the Bristol Genetics Laboratory and the FH Nurse Specialist to ensure appropriate cascade screening of the relatives of patients with FH.

2. Job Specific Duties

2.1. To work independently, under the supervision of a consultant, in lipid clinics held at Bristol Royal Infirmary or elsewhere within the Trust.

2.2. To work closely with the Clinical Biochemistry laboratory service to organise specialist lipid investigations required by clinic patients.

2.3. To systematically review the results of patient diagnostic testing.

2.4. To work with patients to formulate appropriate clinical management plans.

2.5. To communicate diagnostic and management information in writing, or if appropriate by other means, with patients' general practitioners.

2.6. To refer patients as appropriate with newly diagnosed FH to the FH Nurse Specialist

Professional Development

1. Undertake local specialist clinical training, as directed by and agreed with a consultant in clinical biochemistry.

2. Undertake initial appraisal with a nominated consultant in clinical biochemistry in relation to this specific role, and agree a personal development plan.

3. Attend regional and/or national specialist meetings for the purpose of continual professional development.

4. Undertake annual appraisal for this role with a nominated consultant in clinical biochemistry.

Provisional Job Plan

1. This is a 2 PA (8 hours) per week post, for a period of 9 months.

2. The postholder will work within the existing Wednesday morning Lipid Clinic (1 PA). The second PA will be for clinical administration, (notionally 2 hours per week) involvement in liaison with primary care (notionally 1 hour per week) and professional development (notionally 1 hour per week).

3. There are no on call duties.

Key Relationships

1. Clinical accountability is to Dr Paul Downie, consultant in clinical biochemistry

2. Managerial accountability is to the Head of Department of Clinical Biochemistry (Dr Andrew Day)
