Full Job Description

This is a fellowship with clinical and research opportunities available for a period of 12 months, intended for ophthalmologists who have completed their training and who wish to learn more of the clinical, molecular and research aspects of modern genetics applied to retinal disease, including electrophysiological and imaging phenotyping. It would particularly suit someone wishing to spend part of their career managing inherited retinal disease. The fellowship will include 8 direct clinical care sessions, and extensive opportunities for additional clinical and research experience, including involvement in key ongoing research projects.,

  • Participation of both adult and paediatric genetics clinics, this is face-to face and virtual sessions.
  • Undertake Genetics Administrative role which includes referral scrutiny.
  • Participation in regular clinical and research meetings
  • Active participation in ongoing research projects
  • Participation in departmental teaching activities
  • The Genetics Service at MEH is a partner within the North-East-West London Genetics Laboratory Hub, following the recent re-designation of genetic testing within NHS England. The clinical fellow would be expected to attend the meetings and present cases of relevant patients and families. There are regular monthly clinical meetings at GOSH that involve the genetics service at MEH, the clinical genetics and ophthalmology services at GOSH., These include:
  • Clinical sessions in both adult and paediatric genetics clinics
  • Undertake Genetics Administrative role
  • Participation in regular clinical and research meetings
  • Active participation in ongoing research projects
  • Participation in departmental teaching activities

    The Service oversees the management of patients and families affected by a wide breadth of paediatric and adult inherited conditions. It is the largest in the country and probably in Europe. Clinics are run by five consultants with a special interest and expertise in genetic disorders:
  • Professor Andrew Webster - adult inherited retinal disorders
  • Professor Michel Michaelides - paediatric and adult inherited retinal disorders, medical retina
  • Mr Omar Mahroo - adult inherited retinal disorders, medical retina (clinics also at St Thomas Hospital); Clinical Lead for Electrophysiology
  • Ms Mariya Moosajee - ocular malformation, inherited glaucoma, paediatrics (clinics also at Great Ormond Street)
  • Mr Patrick Yu-Wai-Man - inherited optic neuropathy (clinical practice jointly with Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge).
