Full Job Description

The Geotechnical Manager (Marine and Tunnelling) will be part of the Engineering and Technical function within the Civil Work Program organisation, responsible for supporting the delivery of constructive geotechnical aspects of enabling works and earthworks on behalf of the contractor alliance. The Geotechnical Manager (Enabling Works and Earthworks) will functionally report to the Engineering Manager but will be expected to work closely with other SZC participants, including the client's design and technical assurance teams, and particularly CWA geotechnical lead in fulfilment of the role.

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the onshore and offshore geotechnical conditions of the SZC site, through review of the existing geotechnical information to support the construction delivery
  • Identify data gaps that present a risk to the design and construction methods and advise on the need for additional GI as necessary.
  • Take a primary role in assessing and defining geotechnical risk in the context of the proposed marine and tunnelling works and support the delivery of appropriate risk mitigation.
  • Take a primary role in defining and agreeing the scope and specification of geotechnical trials and tests within the CWP as necessary and agreed.
  • Ensure that appropriate data is transmitted to the contractor's supply chain, as appropriate to their scope of work.
  • Review technical reports, designs and submissions, commenting on geotechnical aspects, sufficiency and geotechnical risk management.
  • Support in the implementation of SZC Scheme-wide GRMS (Geotechnical Risk Management Strategy) including the development of appropriate and applicable Geotechnical Risk Registers and other geotechnical risk management procedures (e.g. Geotechnical Baseline Reports).
  • Support in the implementation of SZC Scheme-wide Geotechnical Data Management Strategy and Plan
  • Assess the risks associated with proposed construction methods for geotechnical and ground engineering works, applying appropriate challenge to deliver optimal solutions for SZC.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations appropriate to the Contractor's scope of work.
  • Contribute to the preparation of Contractor designs, e.g. Temporary Works Design, providing specialist geotechnical input/ advice to designers and checking work as appropriate.

    Broad-based technical specialism in geotechnical engineering (or engineering geology) with demonstrable applicability/relevance to the requirements of SZC with particular focus on tunnelling and underground construction
  • Experience in the delivery of marine construction relevant to the requirements of SZC.
  • Competency in report writing and preparation of technical presentations; clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate and engage effectively at a range of levels: senior management, client, design, delivery and supply chain; explaining complex geotechnical problems/concepts to technical and non-technical experts.
  • Understand the relationship between technical and commercial risk and advising teams accordingly.
  • Mentoring junior staff
  • Strong organisational skills, with ability to set priorities of actions with rigorous capability to conduct workflows from start to completion
  • Ability to interrogate and interpret geotechnical data using industry recognised software, appropriate to geotechnical field.
  • Specialist geotechnical support to Construction Quality Assurance & Control (CQA and CQC)
  • Provide ad-hoc technical support in response to change during project execution.
  • Specialist geotechnical support in risk mitigation and management of non-conformance and non-compliance on ground related matters., Degree and Professionally qualified.
  • Major Project Construction industry experience with wider experience of implementation and management of constructive geotechnics preferably within a contractor-lead environment.
  • Experience working on deep foundations including diaphragm walls, ground anchors and piling.
  • Experience of tunnelling.
  • Experience of executing and managing marine/offshore GI
  • Experience of execution of marine-based geotechnical engineering.
  • Pursuant to providing holistic geotechnical engineering support to CWA and the project wider geotechnical engineering experience would be beneficial including:
  • Experience of ground improvement techniques.
  • Experience of large-scale dewatering schemes (desirable).
  • Experience of large scale earthworks and materials management

The shareholders hold their investment in SZC through NNB Holdings Company (SZC) Limited. Over the course of the current shareholding arrangements the shareholdings of the two shareholders will change.
  • The shareholders will fund SZC up until Financial Close through equity in line with the approved schedule and budget. SZC's business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure (including activities relating to hydrogen, direct air capture and/or desalination) at Sizewell C in Suffolk. The principal objectives of the current development phase of the SZC project are to agree and implement the Capital Raise Plan, including completing an equity and debt raise, agree the core supply chain contracts and obtain the regulatory permits and licences required for the construction phase of the Project (including the core environmental permits and nuclear site licence). Prior to the government investment decision SZC operated as part of EDF in the Nuclear Development business unit and was staffed by EDF colleagues and independent contractors who are now in the process of transferring to the direct employment of SZC. It is setting itself up as an organisation capable of delivering a new nuclear power plant, from investment case and funding, to construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance and decommissioning. The SZC construction programme has a technical and commercial business case predicated on technical replication of Hinkley Point C. EDF will be an important supplier of nuclear capability for the SZC Programme from its established nuclear business footprint in the UK.
