Full Job Description

This is a high-profile and fast-paced role as part of the Private Office for the Director General for Business Group within the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). The Business Group is the department's centre of expertise for UK sectors, responsible for driving business growth at the heart of the economy. We work across business sectors and with other government departments to support a growing, robust and dynamic economy that creates opportunities nationally and internationally, generates better jobs, puts money in people's pockets and opens up avenues for success in every corner of the UK. We are looking for a motivated and proactive Group Corporate Business Manager to lead and coordinate Business Group's corporate activities, supporting the Director General, and someone who has the values and enthusiasm to make a real difference to the Group's culture. The post holder will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, attention to detail and problem-solving abilities as well as an affinity for working collaboratively with others, both within and beyond the Group. The role involves regular exposure to senior stakeholders and also has line management responsibilities. The Director General's Private Office consists of the Chief of Staff, Group Corporate Business Manager, Private Secretary and Executive Assistant. We are a supportive and respectful team, and you will be expected to work collaboratively as a team player while also helping to set strategic direction. The role provides excellent opportunities to develop your career in the Civil Service and to acquire new skills, both through on-the-job training and via DBT's extensive learning and development offering. We take diversity and inclusion seriously and respect difference, and we would encourage applications from diverse and under-represented groups.

  • You will have line management responsibility for the Director General's Executive Assistant (HEO) and you will support their development, setting direction as needed.
  • With the support of the HEO, you will be responsible for the smooth and effective delivery of Private Office's corporate function, ensuring there are systems in place to stay on top of activity and that actions are responded to accurately and in a timely and consistent manner.
  • You will build and maintain strong working relationships across the Group and DBT, at all levels, including working with our HR and Finance Business Partners and the Group's Senior Leadership Team to ensure we are taking forward DBT's corporate priorities appropriately and effectively.
  • You will coordinate our network of Directorate Corporate Business Managers, providing guidance and leadership and working with them to understand and address strategic issues as well as to deliver the Group's corporate activities such as the development of People Survey action plans and performance reporting.
  • You will develop and deliver the Director General's Group engagement plan, including analysing data relating to employee experience to identify key areas for improvement, organising regular engagements with different grades to build a good Group culture, and preparing all-staff newsletters from the Director General to the Group to ensure clear and timely communication of key messages.
  • You will be part of a collaborative team and work closely with the Director General's Chief of Staff on wider priorities including workforce planning and organising awaydays.
