Full Job Description

We're looking for a Group Head of Safety to join our team! As our Group Head of Safety, you will provide expert advice and be the key enabler in creating, monitoring and delivering written management systems to support the Group in achieving its safety objectives for a best practice safety culture.

You will drive the development of a learning and coaching style for stakeholders and employees within our three lines of defence assurance model. You will develop great relationships with stakeholders; managing, assisting, advising and coaching on all health and safety issues and work streams while ensuring ethical and legal requirements are always maintained.

This is a key role where you will help to maintain and continually develop a best practice environment, health and safety system to support the regulatory and statutory frameworks across our operations.

The role can be based within our London, Sunderland or Derby office, a minimum of 2 days per week with the rest focusing on where you can best deliver, whilst still allowing for the required work life balance. The role operates Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week with 1 hour lunch per day. Note that the role will involve some travel each month to various business locations.

What are the key responsibilities for the role?

  • Manage and be accountable for the operational activity and performance of the Corporate Safety team, including work planning, monitoring and review, to ensure the provision of high-quality competent advice and an efficient and effective service, which fully integrates best practice and best value within all aspects of service delivery and complies with statutory & policy requirements.

  • Directly support the responsible persons in all safety matters across our three UK Arriva Ltd office locations, identifying and responding to current legal and best practice requirements.

  • Maintain, review and develop all aspects of Arriva Group's safety management system, policies and minimum standards.

  • Monitor, evaluate and review new and upcoming safety legislation in the UK and across the E.U. to ensure that Arriva Group has systems and procedures in place to meet legal compliance and other requirements.

  • Work in partnership with senior managers across the business, empowering them to be proactive in meeting their responsibilities and in ensuring continual improvement of safety within their businesses and divisions.

  • Provide second line of defence assurance through audit, across our businesses. Leading the coaching, challenge and assurance, inspection, and e-data collection to our businesses.

  • Advise on, and recommend, the setting of safety policy, objectives and performance measures. To produce an annual safety report, plan and regular performance reports.

  • Advise on health and safety competence and capability, and organisational training and development needs. To work with colleagues to ensure the availability of a programme of safety training to suit organisational needs.

  • Promote the Corporate Affairs function and other allied corporate social responsibility objectives, including diversity and equality.

  • Help create a group-wide culture focused on a safe, secure and healthy work environment for all.

    We are looking for an experienced individual, able to demonstrate experience within a similar role and ideally with a Bachelor's Degree, NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Safety and Health., Be a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) or working towards/equivalent experience.

  • Be able to demonstrate, current knowledge of health and safety laws, regulations and best practice across a diverse range of risks.

  • Have an ISO 45001 Lead auditor qualification, or similar, and experience in completing safety audits.

  • Have a successful track record of planning, developing and implementing health and safety management systems in large, complex organisations.

  • Demonstrate the ability to identify relevant priorities, plan projects and prioritise workloads to deliver necessary changes and meet service requirements.

  • Demonstrate influential and motivational skills and the confidence to deal effectively and professionally with a variety of people at all levels.

  • Be able to build positive relationships based on trust and confidence in order to foster and environment of cooperation and collaboration.

  • Be able to to proactively anticipate, research and mitigate problems, identify underlying issues, interpret data and communicate issues and implications to others in a professional and high quality manner (i.e. within presentations, reports and emails).

  • Be able to work dynamically across a global business.

  • Have a solution focused approach to problem solving with experience managing and delivering change in a large multi-site organisation.

  • Be a natural communicator, with excellent people skills and able to work collaboratively across the health and safety team and wider business functions.

  • Show open mindedness and willingness to adopt new working methods and initiatives to improve the overall environment, safety and health and wellbeing in the business.
