Full Job Description

Are you passionate about community engagement and confident working independently? As a Gypsy & Traveller Liaison Officer, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring that the residents of Salford's Gypsy and Traveller site are supported in their tenancies and daily lives. This is a hands-on, site-based role that, while occasionally challenging, is ultimately about providing vital support to residents and helping maintain a well-managed, harmonious community. You'll be responsible for both the practical management of the site and for building strong, trusting relationships with residents to help them access essential services.,

  • Tenancy Support & Site Management: Serve as the primary landlord contact, assisting residents with tenancy-related issues such as rent payments, site maintenance, and understanding their responsibilities. You'll enforce tenancy conditions while also offering advice on budgeting, housing benefits, and access to other support services.
  • Building Relationships & Community Support: Work closely with residents to foster a positive, safe, and supportive living environment. This includes advising on tenancy matters, helping with conflict resolution between residents, and acting as a liaison between the residents and external agencies such as health and welfare services.
  • Day-to-Day Operations: Conduct regular site inspections, monitor site conditions, and ensure compliance with health, safety, and fire regulations. You'll also manage void properties, ensuring quick turnarounds for new tenancies, and take action on repairs, maintenance, and site improvements.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle disputes and address breaches of tenancy agreements, including anti-social behaviour, through legal avenues where necessary. You will need to take a fair but firm approach to ensure the site remains a safe and welcoming environment for all residents.
  • Collaboration with External Partners: Work closely with Salford Property Link, social services, and other authorities to ensure residents can access the resources they need. You'll also contribute to broader service improvements by implementing efficient working practices across the Housing Service., Day-to-Day Life as a Liaison Officer:
  • While the role presents challenges, it's equally rewarding, offering you the chance to work closely with a unique community. One day you might be helping residents resolve tenancy issues, while the next you'll be managing site maintenance, liaising with local services, or conducting health and safety checks. This variety means that no two days are the same, and your role will be critical in maintaining both the functionality and community spirit of the site. What We Offer:
  • Continuous professional development through a wide range of learning opportunities, including online courses and apprenticeship programmes.
  • The opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the Gypsy and Traveller community, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive in their homes.
  • Access to a supportive work environment where your contribution to improving the service will be valued.
  • Our Vision: At Salford City Council, we aim to create a fairer, greener, and healthier city. The work you'll do as a Gypsy & Traveller Liaison Officer is a key part of this, ensuring all residents, including those in minority communities, receive fair and equitable services.

  • Confidence in managing challenging situations and resolving conflicts independently, while maintaining a compassionate approach.
  • A strong ability to build rapport with diverse communities, ensuring residents feel supported in their tenancy and able to access the services they need.
  • Experience in delivering services directly to customers, particularly in housing or a related field, along with a good understanding of Gypsy and Traveller community issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with both residents and external partners.
  • Practical knowledge of health and safety regulations and the ability to maintain a well-functioning residential site.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage workloads and ensure timely site inspections, repairs, and void management.
  • A valid driving licence.
