Clinical
It is envisaged that this post will attract 10 programmed activities per week (8.5 PA direct clinical care and 1.5 PA supporting professional activities). Additional agreed additional direct clinical care PAs may be available. As per Trust Policy for new consultants increases beyond 1.5 SPA, in respect of appropriate activities can be negotiated by mutual agreement following annual job planning reviews.
Teaching & Academic role
Alder Hey serves as a teaching hospital to the University of Liverpool. The undergraduate curriculum is based on problem-based learning. All consultants are expected to take part in undergraduate teaching. Support is available to enable new consultants to deliver Level Two training., The HDU (19 beds) is in the middle of the Hospital, part of the Critical Care Unit, adjacent to both the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (24 beds) and the Burns Unit (5 beds). It is separately staffed to its current 15 bed capacity and has approximately 650 admissions per year. Most patients admitted to HDU will require level 2 critical care interventions. Those requiring level 1 interventions are admitted to general wards.
Patients are admitted as a step-down from PICU, a step-up from the general wards, from theatre following surgical procedures and from the Emergency Department. Patients who require HDU level care, are also admitted from hospitals throughout the Region. In tandem with the PICU, the HDU supports the Trust's specialist clinical tertiary and quaternary care services.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an enthusiastic, well-motivated team in the High Dependency Unit at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. HDU sits within the Department of Critical Care that resides in the Division of Surgical Care.
Applicants must have experience in managing patients in acute or high dependency settings or have experience in a relevant subspecialty such as, but not limited to, general paediatrics, cardiology, respiratory or emergency medicine.
Whilst the RCPCH Paediatric High Dependency Care Special Interest (SPIN) module would be advantageous, applicants with demonstrable critical care or acute care acumen would be supported to undertake the SPIN module in the first few months of the locum period with a rotation into PICU and anaesthetics to achieve the appropriate competences.

Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients' homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site., Alder Hey Children's Hospital in the Park, which has 270 in-patient beds, opened in October 2015. We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We're also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.
