Full Job Description

The Head of Adult Skills is responsible for the growth and performance of designated department(s) including teaching, learning and assessment practices and business planning.,

  • Working closely with the Director of Adult Skills to focus on the strategic growth, operational development and continuous improvement of the department, adopting an agile approach to ensure the curriculum reflects trends, LMI, industry reforms etc
  • Be responsible for developing a curriculum offer that is relevant to local needs and in line with the College vision; liaise with relevant external partners to ensure the department maximises opportunities.
  • Develop and improve quality assurance processes related to a range of key performance indicators, ensuring compliance with all relevant quality assurance requirements and regulations, taking a lead role in promoting excellent practice in teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Ensuring curriculum leaders are accountable for the compliance of their areas with these processes and actively influencing a performance management culture.
  • To drive positive cultural change, embodying and promoting the values and behaviours of the college and empowering staff to reach their full potential.
  • Our ideal Head of Adult Skills should have the following qualifications, skills and experience:
  • Developing and leading the delivery of the Service's annual quality cycle, including:
  • The observation of teaching and learning.
  • Performance monitoring
  • Rarpa audits
  • Internal and external verification.
  • OFSTED readiness
  • Supporting the Director in the Self-Assessment process.
  • Supporting managers in developing high quality and evaluative self-assessment in their curriculum areas and offers
  • Monitoring the ongoing implementation of the self-assessment process and quality improvement action plans
  • Overseeing writing and updating of Curriculum, Service-level, SARs (Self Assessment Reviews), QIPs (Quality Improvement Plans) and delivering associated training for staff.
  • Adopting and promoting a team-wide performance-focussed based approach aiming to improve attendance, retention, achievement and other KPIs.
  • Leading the timely process of curriculum planning with curriculum teams to ensure the best success of meeting income targets

    Managing in either the Adult Education or Further Education sector
  • Working to frameworks and external requirements, including Ofsted and awarding bodies, and how they relate to the role.
  • Planning provision to meet local and external needs
  • Demonstrable experience in leading change that has resulted in performance improvements and improvements in teaching and learning
  • Performance management of individuals and teams
  • The ability to influence and motivate teams and individuals to support positive change
  • Strong analytical skills (of both quantitative and qualitative data) and a proven ability to interpret and critique policy influencing teaching and learning and skills
  • Effective team working with partners and colleagues
  • The Head of Department role carries a teaching commitment of 4 hours per week.
