Full Job Description

NATS Services are entering an important phase of our strategy to provide technology enabled services to New Airspace Users (NAU). This will establish routes to market and accelerate technology enablement by developing strategic partners and collaborations. The new NAU P&L underpins NATS overall strategy to 2040 to be relied upon by all airspace users for services, generating additional commercial value from space to ground globally.

The Head of Safety, Regulatory, & Policy will align strategic goals & establish frameworks for routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) operations. The role influences the direction of these frameworks whilst assessing implications and risks.

Role purpose:

  • Manage NAU governmental and regulatory affairs to maximise commercial opportunity

  • Ensure safety, assurance, and compliance across NAU services

  • Assess current and future policies, regulations, and market standards to understand risks, requirements, and implications

  • Develop strategies for influencing and shaping the evolving NAU market

  • Develop cost effective frameworks for service delivery aligned with policies, regulations, and standards with approvals from regulators

  • Ensure governance of regulatory and governmental NAU engagement involving internal and external leadership and executives as needed


  • Other duties include:
  • Develop a strategic outlook into the regulatory, policy, and safety frameworks

  • Influence and shape future direction at governmental, regulatory, and operational levels

  • Ensure strategic decisions are taken with understanding and risk assessment of implications from a regulatory, policy, and safety perspective

  • Assessing implications and emerging regulations, policies, to help shape and prioritise NAU strategy and future requirements

  • Ensure safety across NAU services acting as an internal regulator from technology enabled services to delivery and operation

  • Working with NAU Partners to shape the industry and maximise market opportunity

  • Work with Customers & Partners to develop pragmatic, cost effective, end to end assurance strategies and approaches

    Educated to degree level, or equivalent demonstrable experience and engagement at governmental, regulatory, and operational level

  • Strategic and conceptual commercial ability, comfortable working with high levels of detail and accuracy

  • Influential, a flair for building relationships, networking, gathering intelligence

  • Excellent communication, organised, able to work autonomously

  • Ability to analyse regulatory, policy, safety, and standards information and trends, recognise opportunities and risks

  • Adaptive and resilient to change, deadlines, stakeholders demands and pressure to deliver

  • Previous experience of NAU emerging market, Civil Aviation ATM sector essential and specific knowledge of the Unified Traffic Management (UTM) market desirable
