Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity to join us as Head of Visits and Events. The role will lead the creation of a new joint visit and events teams who design and deliver a proactive programme of engagements for the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and wider Management Board to help tell the story of our New Met for London plan and engage internal and external audiences in its delivery.

We are looking for someone with significant event design and production experience, with a track record of creating, planning and successfully executing outstanding events, in a large operational organisation against a diverse and complex events programme.

The Role:

You will play a key role in helping us tell our reform journey in different ways through the delivery of a programme of events. Whether that's by setting up a roundtable event, hosting a reception, or bringing guests up close with our specialist capabilities. Creativity will be key.

You will be responsible for increasing the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner's visibility and engagement internally with our workforce and externally with community groups, businesses, charities, and a range of other organisations.

Alongside this you oversee all incoming visit requests from Government and City Hall for senior politicians including leading on regular visits from Secretaries of State and the Mayor of London.

The team you will lead will also develop and manage key corporate internal events supporting the Commissioner and Management Board, these will include Senior Leader Events (SLEs), corporate awards and other key leadership events.

You will be responsible for the events from start to finish and be expected to lead your team to deliver these, you will also need to rally support from across the directorate to ensure that set piece events are a whole directorate effort.

You will be a key leader on the organisation who leaders can turn to for advice on visits and events, providing them with strategic advice to ensure consistent local delivery.,

  • Lead and oversee a wide variety of sometimes complex content design, development, and execution of a comprehensive programme of Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner visits, working with the Commissioner's communications leads and private office.

  • Responsible for delivering an annual schedule of memorable and impactful internal and external events that support the delivery of the organisations New Met for London plan.

  • Successful delivery of incoming VVIP visits including Secretaries of State, the Mayor of London, Ministers, and senior international delegations.

  • You will lead a visits and events team to agree timelines, secure additional project personnel where needed, source venues, advise on content and audience requirements, manage the budget, evaluate the events, work with contractors to secure all the audio-visual needs and exhibition build for the events, and work with other colleagues across the Met to promote the event and secure attendance.

  • To support seamless delivery, you will ensure effective briefing and support to Management Board and other senior colleagues, including thorough written briefing notes and speaking bullets, that ensure they are prepared to communicate and engage at the highest standard at each visit and event.

  • Ensure events and visits are supported as needed with engagement, media, social and internal communications to ensure our event audiences have a joined-up event and engagement experience, before, during and after events, and the impact of relevant events is amplified successfully where needed.

  • A leader who supports their team and other members of staff by providing clear line direction, management, objectives, feedback, and support, with particular attention to managing and developing their skills to build potential and ensuring that key objectives set for communication delivery are met., The Location of this role is New Scotland Yard - Westminster. In addition, you may be expected to work at other Met buildings across London as part of a blended working agreement. There are also some opportunities for remote working when appropriate.


  • You will be required to work some weekends and other out of hours cover with appropriate notice to ensure the successful delivery of visits and events for which TOIL or overtime will be available.

    You will be part of working a weekend rota (approximately one weekend in five) with premium pay for weekends and time off in lieu and may be required to provide other out of hours cover with appropriate notice. You will also be part of an on-call rota.

    The starting salary is £57,301, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

    The salary is broken down as £54,460 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £66,356. Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.
