Full Job Description

With colleagues, to share in meeting the personal care needs of service users. To work in a way that respects the dignity and choices of individuals. Undertake allocated domestic duties when necessary and assist generally in the day-to-day activities of the home. Each health care assistant is only to undertake duties for which they are specifically trained and have been deemed competent.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Assist service users to get-up in the morning and prepare for the day ahead, dressing, undressing, washing, bathing and toileting.

  • Provide appropriate assistance to service users with mobility difficulties or physical disabilities, including incontinence, utilising approved aids and equipment.

  • Give defined care in bed to service users who are sick.

  • Assist in the care of service users who are dying.

  • Participate in the 'keyteam'/ Keyworker scheme as directed.

  • Ensure all records, charts daily summary are completed accurately, legibly and concise to the care and present of individual residents.

  • Be meaningfully involved in the promotion of mental and physical activity for service users by engaging in conversation, accompanying on excursions and participating in activities such as reading, writing, crafts and other recreation.

  • Make and change beds; tidy rooms; undertake light cleaning and empty and cleaning of commodes.

  • Cleaning and helping in the maintenance of equipment including, wheelchairs, walking frames, spectacles, hearing aids and other items.

  • Set tables and trays; serve meals; assist service users who are unable to feed themselves; clear and tidy the dining room.

  • Apply maximum integrity in all dealings with service users, their personal property and their relatives.

  • Quickly answer Nurse Call system, the door bell and telephone; greet visitors.

  • Make visitors feel welcome and offer refreshments to ensure their comfort.

  • Participate in 'shift handover' taking directions from both shift leader and senior carer as appropriate. Follow allocation of duties as directed. Read and participate in the preparation of reports.

  • Participate in all staff, service user and relatives meetings as directed.

  • Participate in training activities as directed to ensure maintenance of competence in role.

  • Report to a Nurse on duty any changes in the health or circumstances of a service user.

  • Work in a way that promotes the independence of service users.

  • Comply at all times with the homes' policies and procedures.

  • Assist in the promotion of continence.


  • Hours of work: As stated in contract of employment.

    This job description is not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake other appropriate duties and projects from time to time. All post holders will be offered appropriate induction and ongoing training to ensure that they are able to perform their duties safely.

    Disclosure and Barring (DBS) Enhanced Check
    This Post requires Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Check and as such is exempt from The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
    This check will also include Enquiry is also made to the Independent Safeguarding Authority to ensure that no adverse record is held in relation to the applicant having been involved in the abuse of Vulnerable Adults.

  • A willingness to undertake The Care Certificate and on-going training courses as directed by the Manager

  • Satisfactory DBS Check

  • Desired:
  • One year's experience of working with the older people.

  • Level 2 Diploma in Health and social care.
