Full Job Description
At EDF UK success is personal. We don't define it, you do. Join our Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship Programme and you'll achieve your career goals in the way you want to. All while contributing to our mission to help Britain achieve Net Zero. "To be delivering projects for Hinkley Point C, the biggest construction project in Europe, is something I didn't expect to be doing at the age of 18!" Isabella, Assistant Project Manager, formerly a Business Apprentice What does this Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship opportunity offer you? We are excited to welcome apprentices to our Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship Programme! A Health Physics Monitor also known as a Radiation Protection Technician, helps to protect people and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination by providing radiation monitoring services. You will provide safety-related advice to operators by taking radiation and contamination measurements using specialist equipment, interpreting the results, and applying them to real life scenarios. You will need to be comfortable working with numbers and completing mental calculations as you will not always have access to a calculator. This role is critical to ensuring safe operations in nuclear facilities and requires a high level of attention to detail, quality and accuracy in recording and interpreting measurements. You will need to have a positive attitude to health, safety and quality.
To be eligible for this role, you'll have five GCSEs in the A
- to C or 9 to 4 range, including English and Maths, or hold a relevant Level 2 qualification. You should be self-motivated and eager to learn and develop, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, while balancing the demands of study and work. Additionally, you will need to meet the requirements for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
During the course of this 2-year Apprenticeship, you'll learn from our industry-leading experts and gain valuable experience, whilst studying for Level 2 qualifications in Radiation Protection. You can expect on-the-job training and the kind of practical experience you simply can't get in a classroom. You will be fulfilling a key role in protecting people and the environment by becoming experienced in hands on radiation protection, and how it's used in a nuclear power plant. You will learn how to measure radiation which cannot be seen, smelled, or felt. You will become familiar with the systems making up the first nuclear power station to be built in a generation. As you gain experience, you will need to wear personal protective equipment for a significant proportion of the working day, including respiratory protective equipment. In this role you will be required to work outside in all weather conditions, at heights, in small spaces and in nuclear facilities with ionising radiation. Pay, benefits and culture Alongside a starting salary of £23,750 and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal. We're talking about everything from electric vehicle leasing to gym membership, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, season ticket loans to enhanced parental leave. At EDF, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated. Here, we do right by each other and everyone's welcome. We're on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our commitment is to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, people with a disability and colleagues from a disadvantaged background. We're a disability confident employer and we'll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments. We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our team members drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. There's no single definition - it's about individuality. That's why we give you the freedom to pursue a career that's unique to you. Because success is personal. Training, development and support for you The Health Physics Apprenticeship course is primarily taught through on the job training over a two-year period, with a 3-week classroom-based block during Year 1 for learning. During the training programme, you'll balance your time between academic study and hands-on experience within our business. Once a month, you'll attend the National College for Nuclear in Cannington, Somerset, while also engaging in remote study through BlackBoard, the College's virtual learning platform. Throughout your journey, you'll be fully supported by a dedicated team, including your Tutors at the National College for Nuclear, your EDF Career Manager, and our Early Careers team. You'll also have access to face-to-face guidance at our on-site Apprentice Hub, along with digital resources to ensure you have everything you need for your learning and development. We're here to support you throughout the process and you'll find helpful tips and advice here: https://www.edfenergy.com/careers/early-careers
