Are you looking for a new challenge? We have an exciting opportunity to join our Health, Safety and Technical Training Team as a Health and Safety Adviser.
The Health, Safety and Technical Training (HSTT) team has a focus on managing risks to our staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors. Ensuring competence at all levels including operator, management and leadership skills. HSTT work closely with function heads, team leaders and staff groups to evaluate compliance, health and safety priorities and training needs across the organisation.
Forestry England manages the public forest estate on behalf of the Forestry Commission in England. The 254,000-hectare estate is the largest single landholding in the country, comprising over 15,000 separate properties, including some of the finest woodlands, forest and open land in England, a wide range of housing and commercial property and a variety of recreation/leisure businesses. The properties are spread across England with management centred on 6 Forest Districts, supported by specialist business units and the National Office teams.
You would be joining a family of approximately 1,200 colleagues and approximately 3,000 volunteers working across a broad range of roles to help us manage the estate, spanning forestry and land management, timber harvesting, property development, recreation and events and the management of 27 visitor centres., The post holder will be covering out East and South Forest Districts plus other business units and districts as required. Ideally you will be based in our South or East district offices, which include Lyndhurst (The New Forest) Hampshire, Bucks Horn Oak Hampshire, Bedgebury Kent, Wendover Buckinghamshire or Santon Downham Suffolk.
Frequent travel will be required to locations across at least two forest districts to support teams and attend meetings. Occasional overnight stays will be required.
The duties of this post require the applicant to have a full current driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK. However, the FC is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants that would allow them to do the job by other means.
provide competent health and safety advice and support across the organisation.
help make sure Forestry England staff and partners meet relevant duties and legislation.
apply best practice and support improving our health and safety culture.
support line managers embedding health and safety arrangements with their teams by attending/holding
regular support visits, demonstrations, toolbox talks, problem-solving and coaching, making sure solutions
are implemented quickly for hazards identified.
work with national teams to support applying health and safety policy, procedures, systems, and
processes.
support developing and implementing corporate risk assessments.
develop and review new and existing health and safety policies, procedures and guidance by consulting
managers and staff involved in relevant tasks and processes.
support line managers to have good quality incident investigations, identifying lessons learned for sharing
and implementing.
provide coaching and support to managers and staff to implement health and safety systems including
Airsweb, Peoplesafe, WorkRite, CoSHH and others where necessary.
develop and introduce ways of communicating and engaging people on health and safety matters relevant
to different audiences, using a range of techniques that are inclusive.
support developing and implementing new initiatives.
support health and safety governance arrangements by contributing to relevant groups, committees, and
networks.
develop and do health and safety audits, providing recommendations for improvement and identifying best
practice.

Essential professional and technical experience
experience of leading a team and demonstrating strong health and safety commitment.
experience of building strong working relationships to support problem solving, working through challenges
and developing alternative strategies to overcome concerns.
a minimum of 2 years of experience in health and safety practice.
ability to use a range of Microsoft Office software packages.
Desirable professional and technical experience
a good understanding of technical forestry, land management and countryside recreation.
experience of working closely with stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
