Full Job Description
Working under supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse who delegates tasks to the post holder. The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) will deliver high quality nursing care to patients, as part of a team. The post holder is responsible for their own practice, working within the defined limits of competence and within the scope of the role. The registered nurse retains accountability for the care delivered by the HCA.
- Develop and maintain good standards of practice.
- To be safe, ensuring appropriate documentation and communication, reporting to the nurse in charge.
- To run clinics and ensure accurate observations and measurements of patients.
- To Chaperone as required following the Trust policy and department guidelines.
- Adhere to the Trust's Policies and Procedures.
- To be aware of any safeguarding concerns and report any issues to nurse in charge, documenting appropriately.
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the service.
- Good communication with patients, their families and colleagues.
- Ensure competency in use of and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.
- Report to the nurse in charge all serious untoward clinical incidents and follow Trust policy in reporting incidents.
- To develop an understanding of Information & Clinical Governance / Risk Management.

- To assist with clerical and administrative duties as required. To use the IT systems, Patient Manager and Clinical Manager and any other computerised system integral to the running of the clinical area.
- Check results and file appropriately, following review by doctor.
- Managing patient notes appropriately.
- Cleaning and maintenance of department equipment.
- Order supplies and stores to ensure the activity of the clinical area can be carried out effectively and efficiently.
- Deliver clinical care to children and young people as required within set protocols, competencies and within the scope of the health care assistant remit.
- To be aware of, and demonstrate adherence to, the Trust's policy on infection control and waste disposal.

- Contribute to providing a clinical environment conducive to learning for staff, students, children and families.

- Attend and participate in the in-service multidisciplinary teaching programme as well as the Trust Mandatory training.

- Assist the registered nurse in creating a positive learning environment for all staff.
- Be aware of own limitations and the need for continuing education and personal development.

- Ensure care that is provided, is reported back to the RN who retains accountability for HCA practice.
- Participate in any Clinical Audit programmes within the area and assist with the evaluation of own practice.
- Carry out hand hygiene audits and environmental cleanliness audits as directed by the nurse in charge.
- Work and adhere to the needs of the service continuously striving to improve the quality of service provision.
- Assist with the moving and handling of patients and loads using the correct moving and handling aids and techniques in accordance with local Trust guidelines.
- Escort children and young people and their parent/carer to and from other departments.
