Full Job Description

The Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infections (AMRHAI) Reference Unit is the national reference laboratory for investigation of antibiotic resistance in, and characterisation of, healthcare associated bacterial pathogens.,

  • To undertake basic microbiology and molecular laboratory duties guided by standard operating procedures, protocols or systems of work based on training provided, and taking into account the operational requirements of the laboratory.
  • To be responsible for technical work in the in-vitro evaluation of novel antibiotics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing kits, molecular testing kits/systems for detecting resistance determinants or surveillance of antimicrobial resistance. To be able to use the LIMS, MS Excel spreadsheets, MS Access databases and perform general laboratory duties and to complement other members of the team. To seek further development for which training will be given.
  • To assist with maintaining quality and safety systems
  • To perform technical validation of laboratory results
  • To make judgements, plan activities and contribute to service development, and may have responsibility for supervision of new staff, visitors or students. To develop the knowledge of how to deal with a range of non-routine activities, such as work allocation, problem solving for a team or area of work.
