Full Job Description

We have an opportunity for an HGV Technician to join our team based in the Fleet Workshop at Braintree District Council.

Working in the fleet workshop, you will part of the team looking after the maintenance and servicing needs of the Council's mixed fleet of heavy and light goods vehicles, plant and machinery. One of your key responsibilities will be to ensure vehicles are serviced and maintained according to the schedule and to DVSA standards, manufacturer's procedures, the Council's Operators Licence and relevant legislation.

Other duties will include diagnostic work, preparation for MOT's, running repairs, roadside breakdown and recovery, welding, completion of paperwork and accurate maintenance of records., 1. Manage the repair/maintenance/welding and servicing of heavy and light goods vehicles, plant and machinery to ensure the fleet remains operational.
2. Attend breakdown repairs and arrange recovery of vehicles off site and out of hours.
3. Work as part of a team to achieve timely, prioritised maintenance, repair and servicing of the Council's vehicles and plant.
4. Clear written and verbal communication with suppliers, customers, colleagues and managers.
5. Procure parts/stock required for the maintenance/service of fleet vehicles.
6. Maintain legally required records and data on repair and servicing of vehicles, machinery and plant.
7. Undertake further training and development as required to fulfil the needs of the service.

1. Co-ordinate the day to day operation of workshop to ensure we meet the requirements set out in the service schedule and fall in line with legislative requirements.
2. Monitor in house machinery for safe effective operation ensuring general compliance with health and safety requirements.
3. Manage required repairs/ MOT preparations to ensure consistent operation of all fleet vehicles.
4. Ensure health and safety requirements and manufacturer's guidelines are adhered to at all times, including the use of protective clothing when appropriate.
5. Undertake any other duties which may reasonably be within the competence of the post holder or the scope of the post.
6. Monitor own work and identify best practice opportunities to improve both service position and development.
7. The above duties and responsibilities give a broad outline of the functions of the post. However by necessity, these duties must be approached in a flexible manner to accommodate the changing needs and demands of the service provided by Braintree District Council. The post holder will be expected to adapt to changing circumstances and therefore the outline of duties may change from time to time.
8. The post holder will be expected to follow the council policies and procedures and act in a flexible, co-operative and professional manner at all times, assisting colleagues to maintain an effective and efficient service delivered economically. The post holder will also be expected to operate within corporate standards of performance and security. In addition, the post holder will be expected to contribute to the general tidiness and housekeeping and ensure a safe working environment is maintained.

To be successful in this role, you will hold a recognised qualification in engineering or motor vehicle repair and maintenance OR relevant experience and have a valid category C driving licence (or willingness to achieve this within 6 months).

It is essential that you have experience of repair and maintenance of a wide variety of HGV vehicles, ideally including refuse vehicles. You will need to be a positive team player who can work unsupervised, manage your own time effectively and be self-motivated. You also need to be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, managers and suppliers.

Flexibility around working hours is required as you will be required to cover shifts and weekends on a rota basis. (37pw Mon - Fri) including late shift.
