Full Job Description

We are delighted to advertise a vacancy for the position of 'Highly Specialised Acute Paediatric Physiotherapist: Neurosciences' based at St George's Hospital, following a secondment opportunity within the team. This is 12-month fixed-term, full time contract, although part time would be considered.

The post holder will join our friendly and enthusiastic team of paediatric physiotherapists responsible for a varied inpatient clinical caseload. They will be responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of acute paediatric physiotherapy services within the neuroscience specialties.

The post holder will be expected to have a high level of clinical skill and be able to work in the following clinical areas:

  • Neurology

  • Neurosurgery

  • Oncology


  • The role will require the post holder to be confident in development and leadership across the above acute services. In addition, the post holder should have advanced skills and expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of acute and chronic paediatric conditions.

    The post holder will have the opportunity to represent St George's at a number of national and regional network meetings.

    The post holder will work closely with the other band 7 acute paediatric physiotherapists in both paediatric intensive care and trauma and orthopaedics to provide cross cover to those clinical areas where appropriate. They will work with the multidisciplinary team and will participate in ward rounds and team meetings.

    The post holder will work alongside the acute paediatric physiotherapy team based in the Child Development Centre at St George's Hospital, in addition to both the wider physiotherapy team and the adult neuroscience physiotherapists where appropriate. Experience in complex discharge planning is required for this role.

    The post holder will be supported with paediatric respiratory competencies in order to support the weekend service.

  • To develop and lead across acute services, including neurosurgery, neurology and oncology.

  • To have advanced skills and expertise in assessment, treatment and management of acute and chronic paediatric conditions including but not limited to: neurosurgery, neurology and oncology.

  • To participate in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings and ward rounds.

  • To develop and maintain excellent relationships with the speciality consultants to ensure high standards of care and timely intervention for children.

  • To be responsible for the supervision and teaching of physiotherapists / physiotherapy assistants / students, MDT staff and parents / carers in physiotherapeutic care of paediatric patients.

  • To work alongside the Highly Specialised Respiratory Paediatric Physiotherapists in Trauma and Orthopaedics and Paediatric Intensive Care to provide skilled team leadership and be responsible for supporting operational management, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in paediatrics, and to set and monitor standards of practice.

  • To supervise, initiate and participate in evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice.

  • To lead in departmental research and audit.

  • To work with senior colleagues in developing and establishing new paediatric services within the Trust.

  • To participate in weekend working, providing cover to paediatric respiratory patients.

  • To work with community and acute colleagues collaboratively to support and treat paediatric patients.
