Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist

This is a fixed term maternity leave cover for an established static post within the Neuro Critical Care Unit. This role provides team leadership and supervision to the B6 Neuro Trauma OT in Neurosciences., The postholder leads and supports the occupational therapy early assessment and rehabilitation of critically unwell patients in the Neuro Critical Care Units. Given the nature of this patient cohort their presentation is often very complex.

The position is highly specialised due to its requirement to provide specialist advice and clinical treatment support in the assessment/management of patients with complex critical care needs - including Transfers, seating, function, positioning, UL management, tone management, cognition, delirium, and disorders of consciousness. This role provides team leadership to the Neuro Trauma OT service and supports clinical supervision into the neurosurgery team. This role assists junior team members to manage their caseloads, clinically reason, complete timely referrals and facilitate discharge planning. This post delivers activity in a service with clear specifications around intensity and specialism of critical care as set out by NHS England, National and local Critical Care networks. Efficient and effective management of this highly complex caseload is required to not only optimise patient outcome but to also reduce length of stay in hospital and the costs of long-term care which can only be
achieved through sufficient specialist staffing levels.

This position provides leadership to the team and provides the daily operational management of the OT team in managing annual leave, sickness, appraisals, and staff performance., The role is essential in order to support/facilitate flow and patient care through clinical pathways and the post supports the delivery of 7-day services.

This post leads the delivery of activity within critical care with clear specifications around staffing ratios, timeliness of assessment and intensity of rehabilitation, supporting the occupational therapists in the early assessment/management of patients with complex critical care needs - including Transfers, seating, function, positioning, tone management, cognition, delirium, and disorders of consciousness.
