Full Job Description

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in a new role? Do you enjoy working in a flexible way and thinking outside of the box? Do you want to make a difference to the lives of young people with language and communication needs? If so, this role may be for you!

We are looking for a forward-thinking, dynamic and innovative speech and language therapist to provide input to young people with speech, language and communication needs who are accessing the Youth Justice Service (YJS) in Bolton.

This role will also be considered as a Band 6/7 progression for the right candidate, which will involve working through role specific competencies to develop your knowledge and skills.

Working within the YJS as a highly specialist SaLT, you will be required to assess young people who have been identified as possibly having SLCN, to determine their needs and identify if there are any adjustments needed to support their understanding or communication needs.

Intervention may be provided to young people where appropriate, and it is important that the applicant is able to think flexibly about their approach to encourage the young people to engage in intervention to support their SLCN.

Traditional assessment methods may not always be appropriate and it will be essential for the applicant to be able to use a range of formal and informal assessments with the young people to enable them to gain an understanding of their SLCN.

It will also be important for the applicant to have an understanding of other commonly associated conditions and be able to apply approaches based on neurodiversity or attachment needs.

Bolton SaLT service is a great place to work. We are a large, diverse service covering the population of Bolton and have a well-structured approach to meeting the needs of our children, young people and families.

In Bolton we like to think about the future and how improvements can be made to better the experience for our service users and stakeholders. If you feel you would be a good fit for our team in this role, get in touch for an informal chat.

The post holder will be responsible for:

· Providing specialist speech and language therapy assessment and intervention for young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) who are accessing the Youth Justice Services (YJS). Supporting discussions related to young people and the impact of their SLCN.

· Working as an autonomous practitioner within the service, being professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work.

· Managing a complex caseload, using evidence-based, client-centred principles, to provide highly specialised assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation and co-ordination of therapy intervention, for complex communication needs in the most appropriate setting.

· Planning and initiating your own continued professional development through researching best practice, networking with colleagues and seeking training opportunities.

· Training, supervision and appraisal for named staff, and to be responsible for training and performance management of allocated speech and language therapy students.

· Providing highly specialist knowledge, skills, training and advice to children, young people and their families, and providing a source of expertise for staff, other professionals as part of the MDT and other agencies.

· Identifying, initiating and implementing service developments.

· Contributing to the running and development of the Speech and Language service through audit, development of policies, procedures and guidelines using evidence-based practise.
