Full Job Description

As an energetic and effective Highway Chargehand, you will be part of a team leading a range of highway front line staff of varying levels of experience working on live highway sites. You will be required to guide and supervise Highway Operatives and Apprentices in the team that undertake a range of road and footway repairs, including flagging and kerbing, pothole repairs and patching, using machinery and tools.

Working with the gully crews, assisting with drainage problems and also responding to damage and emergencies could also be required therefore need you to be able to complete works to a variety of deadlines.

We're seeking someone who will not only fit seamlessly into the team but someone who demonstrates strong leadership and displays a commitment to continuous development of staff and themselves with a dedication to working effectively for the City Council.

You will be leading and work with a variety of different supervisors, chargehands and operatives depending on the nature of work required. You will also be expected to mentor and pass on experience to our Apprentices who will be based within teams. You will be the representing the face of Salford which requires behaviours that demonstrate our values.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a front line team maintaining and improving the highway across the City. With on-site highway maintenance and/or practical highway construction experience, you will join a highly active and diverse Highway Services Construction Team undertaking repairs of a wide variety of different sized jobs on a daily basis.

You will join the Highways Construction Services front line Team working alongside other chargehands, highway operatives, street lighting operatives and gully crews delivering highways repair and maintenance functions and delivery of schemes.
