Full Job Description

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Specialty Doctor to work in the Histopathology/Cellular Pathology Departments at North Tyneside General Hospital.

There are at present 5 Consultant Histopathologists, 2 Speciality Doctors and one retired consultant on the bank within the department based at North Tyneside General Hospital. The department has full UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accreditation.

The histology workload amounts to approximately 23,000 requests per year and covers a broad range of medical and surgical specialties (excluding neuropathology and renal biopsies). A full range of special stains is available and immunocytochemistry staining is fully automated with a wide range of antibodies available. There are approximately 2500 non-gynae cases received annually, comprising fine needle aspirates from most sites with the usual range of brushings and washings from the bronchus, FNA breast, thyroid, pleural, peritoneal washings, bile duct brushings and urine samples.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is committed to assisting all employees to achieve a work-life balance, regardless of their personal circumstances. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to gradually undertake the full range of pathologist duties involved in the delivery of the histopathology/cytology provision - including opening of specimens, cutting up and reporting of the range of biopsies and resections (GI, Breast, Gynae, Skin, Urology, lung) as well as non-gynae cytology. These will be under supervision to begin with and gradually progressing to independent levels. The candidates will also be fully supported to achieve CESR by rotating them to relevant specialties if needed at local neighbouring Trusts.

The post holder must have an empathetic and sensitive approach to patients' needs with an ability to show concern for others recognising individual work-life needs.

Demonstrate highly effective communication skills with an ability to influence and negotiate and use power appropriately within the organisation. Be an approachable team member who is inclusive, co-operative, caring and a good listener who acts appropriately where necessary on what is being said.

Manage the boundaries appropriately within the team showing loyalty through development of a positive and responsible approach to lessons learnt in team errors.

We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, covering one of the largest geographical areas of any NHS trust in the country. Leading in innovation and quality - opening a state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. Do you want to work in one of the best performing NHS organisations in England? Work in an organisation that supports its staff and focuses on staff experience as much as it does the experience of its patients? You can live and breathe in an area that has the cleanest air, cost effective living, great nightlife, some of the best schools with a wealth of history available on your doorstep. Sound too good to be true? Well it isn't, this is what you get when you work for Northumbria Healthcare, this is the Northumbria Way! Please read 'applicant guidance notes'
before submitting your application.

The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions may change as the service develops.

The Job Plan will typically include an average of 9.0 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care duties and 1.0 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities.
