Full Job Description
Home Birth Midwife, Band 6, St George's University Hospital, London
Are you excited about working flexibly while helping create positive birth experiences for women in your community? Sound like your kind of role? If you're still on the fence, keep reading-we think you'll love what we have to offer!
No two days are the same when you're working in the community! You'll bring your midwifery skills to a diverse range of women with different needs, whether at home or in the hospital. From supporting pregnancies and birth at home to caring for new mums and their babies after birth, you'll be providing compassionate, woman-centred care every step of the way.
When you join us, you'll get to work alongside a fantastic multidisciplinary team delivering holistic care to our diverse local community. You'll be supported by midwifery coordinators, team leaders, and matrons, while also having the opportunity to mentor junior staff such as student midwives and healthcare assistants.
We promote physiological birth and are actively working to increase the number of homebirths and the option of giving birth in our midwife-led unit, as we move towards a continuity of carer model. You'll play a key role in this exciting shift, supporting women to have the birth experience that's right for them.
You'll also get to develop your skills, handling everything from home births to obstetric emergencies with confidence, all while knowing you've got a strong team behind you. Whether it's celebrating a new life or offering support through more difficult times, you'll be there for women and their families, making a true impact.
Main duties of the job
This role is a great opportunity for qualified midwives who want to make the move into community work, as well as those who are already doing it! You'll be reimbursed for the miles you travel during visits and call-outs, get a flat rate for being on call, and earn an even higher rate if you're called in.
If you're looking for a role where you can grow, connect with others, and really make a difference, this could be the perfect fit for you.
+ Deliver care throughout pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period, in both hospital and community settings.
+ Act as an advocate for women and their babies, ensuring care is evidence-based and follows current guidelines.
+ Support the increase in homebirth rates and midwife-led unit births, aligned with the continuity of carer model.
+ Manage emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, postpartum haemorrhage, and neonatal resuscitation with confidence, in both hospital and home environments.
+ Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff, including student midwives and healthcare assistants, helping to foster a positive learning environment.
+ Perform tasks such as IV drug administration, perineal suturing, and the management of epidurals.
+ Ensure clear, accurate, and timely documentation of all care provided, including assessments and care plans.
+ Work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure a coordinated approach to care.
+ Offer emotional and practical support in sensitive situations like miscarriages, stillbirths, and neonatal death.
+ Be responsible for the protection and safeguarding of children, and have knowledge of mental health and referral procedures.
+ Provide health education and information to women and their families, empowering them with the knowledge they need for their care.
Working for our organisation
We're here to support you every step of the way as you continue your midwifery career with us. Our Practice Education Team will welcome you with a comprehensive orientation, plus lots of opportunities for continued professional development (CPD) and mandatory updates, so you'll always feel confident and ready for whatever comes next.
You'll also be supported by our Clinical Placement Facilitators (CPFs), who are on hand to help you work with students and offer SSSA training to help you reach practice supervisor or assessor status. On top of that, you'll get to collaborate with an amazing group of specialist midwives in areas like Antenatal Screening, Infant Feeding, Bereavement, Maternal Medicine, Diabetes, and more. These teams are full of knowledge and ready to help you grow in areas you're passionate about.
We believe in developing your skills across the whole maternity service, especially through our Continuity of Carer model, which helps us give women the most consistent and supportive care possible. In your first year, you might experience different parts of the service through a rotation, but your main focus will be on Homebirth care-an area we're really passionate about growing.
We know how much you care about supporting women and delivering great midwifery care, so if you're looking for a new challenge in a warm and supportive environment, we'd love to hear from you.
Plus, you'll be based at St George's Hospital in Tooting, one of the country's leading teaching hospitals, where you'll be surrounded by opportunities to learn and develop, alongside St George's, University of London.
