Full Job Description

Applications are invited for a Horticultural Facility Supervisor at the Sainsbury Laboratory University of Cambridge (SLCU). You will play a crucial part in providing general technical assistance to the Institute and serve as a primary point of contact for researchers.

You will fully integrate into a small and friendly team, participating in routine activities alongside your colleagues. Under guidance from the Horticultural Facility Manager you will be responsible for directing the other members of the team in order to prioritise tasks when working under pressure. Some tasks require physically strenuous manual handling, therefore you must have the ability to safely complete these tasks, making use of assistance where necessary. You will act as a first point of contact for team members and researchers with horticultural or service related enquiries. You should have experience of relevant horticultural and containment regulation and practice, as well as factual and theoretical knowledge. You will also have good analytical and problem solving skills. It is important that you have excellent written and verbal communication skills as you will be liaising directly with researchers and other members of the institute and wider university. The role involves pesticide application and use of a counterbalance forklift, therefore licences for these activities would be beneficial, however training will be provided if required. You should have the following:

  • Proven practical experience of horticulture.
  • Experience growing under experimental conditions.
  • Experience growing model plant species, eg Arabidopsis, Nicotiana, Medicago, etc.
  • Experience of plant pest control.
  • Previous supervisory experience is desirable.
  • Some attendance on site outside of usual working hours may occasionally be required.
