Full Job Description

The House system is at the heart of life at Oundle. It is in the community of the House that most pupils find the confidence and sense of purpose that lead to fulfilment in the larger community of the School. In providing exceptional pastoral care and guidance to the boarders, the role of House Matron is key. Working under the direction of the Housemaster/Mistress, your primary role will be to:

  • supervise and provide care for the pupils, with particular responsibilities for the physical, social and emotional wellbeing and presentation of the pupils in the House.
  • conduct daily surgeries, providing care and supervision of unwell pupils
  • liaise with parents/guardians/staff/medical staff in respect of the wellbeing of the pupils
  • be responsible for the smart appearance of the pupils
  • contribute to life in the House by involvement in House social functions, helping to arrange and participate in trips and events, and supporting pupils in their everyday activities where possible.
  • House Matrons are required to be resident in the Boarding House, with self-contained accommodation available throughout the year and all meals provided on duty days. Many Matrons at Oundle School have family members living in the accommodation with them (subject to safeguarding checks), and pets are welcome. Matrons may expect their working hours per week to be no fewer than 45 and this may be exceeded from time to time. You will have one 30-hour period off per week in Term time. Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to work for 35 weeks of each academic year, which is made up of Term time (33 weeks) and then time for ensuring the House is prepared and ready to receive pupils at the beginning of each Term plus any special activities, such as planned training.

If you have a passion for providing outstanding pastoral care and are looking for a rewarding role where you will make a significant and important contribution to the welfare of children and young adults, the role House Matron may be the ideal next role for you.

Oundle and Laxton Junior Schools have long been associated with the very best of modern independent education, especially boarding. The Schools take seriously their responsibility to pupils so that they can emerge as decent, open-minded adults; ambitious about what they can go on to achieve and contribute. Over 1400 pupils are on roll at the School, of whom 840 are full boarders. Academic results are steadfastly excellent. A team of around 800 staff, both academic and support, ensure an education of the highest standard is in place across the Schools with the efforts of the whole team focused on this fundamental aim.
