About the Opportunity

Nuclear Power Programmes is one of the newest Business Units within Jacobs and has been formed with the vision to support positive change and help shape the future of Nuclear Power.

Operational throughout the UK and across continental Europe, we are seeking to expand our team on a variety of nuclear projects, which range in technologies and that find themselves at different stages of their development. To do this, we are seeking to continuously employ talented individuals to join our diverse team that are excited about nuclear projects and are committed to Net Zero, and Energy Security.

The Joint Design Office is managed by Hinkley Point C, Licensee and Manager of the HPC Project. It is made up of staff from HPC managing the teams and owning the processes, EDF EPR Engineering UK (EPR-E) who study and approve design changes as well as non-conformances within their scope of delegated authority and Contractors who previously delivered the detailed design.

Jacobs are seeking I&C Engineers at various levels, to be based from our Aztec West office in Bristol. Producing Instrumentation and Control (I&C) specification in close collaboration with process design studies in the scope of Edvance UK for HPC, i.e. production of documentation required
to purchase, commission, and operate the systems, including related communication with interfacing entities.

The role responsiblities are as follows:

  • Responsible for system design and system integration into overall HPC design; Produce, Review and update the system documentation for operator instructions, human machine interface, safety and environmental, control logic design, as well as periodic testing in compliance with the engineering rules, methodologies, quality processes, and tools

  • Particularly for Instrumentation and Control, performing the analysis for defining the I&C Functional Requirements of the system and production of the I&C logic.

  • Writing of the Instrumentation and Control Functional Requirements

  • Specification of Detailed Functional Diagram (DFD; I&C logic diagram)

  • Writing of the Functional Test Procedure and running respective tests

  • Writing of system design manual part 5 (I&C logic description)

  • Specification of human machine interface (alarms sheets, operating images, operating modes)

  • Analysis and verification of input data, requirements, and lessons learnt from other stations

  • Engage proactively with all stakeholders around the system in Edvance to ensure the delivery of a product meeting the requirements set by all

  • disciplines (layout, civil, hazard, nuclear safety, environment, configuration management, procurement ...)
  • Contribute to topics around good practises, innovation, improvement of processes, and quality

  • Participate in experience sharing activities within the discipline


  • Here's what you'll need:
  • I&C, Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification

  • Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in Instrumentation and Control design

  • Knowledge of the EPR I&C design principles and I&C platforms

  • Experience of producing design documentation and Test Specifications

  • Ability to effectively manage own workload in order to produce high quality documents and respect deadlines

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both written and orally, in English

  • Proactive and confident in communicating with others, particularly those based in remote offices including France and Germany.

  • Proactive in developing positive working relations with others within the project.

  • Continuously looking for opportunities to improve quality of engineering studies and the subsequent documentation produced

  • Ability to productively coach and support others with the team

  • Ability to prioritise, manage numerous with other stakeholders
