Full Job Description
The Discovery and Appraisal team are responsible for the management of records within the Welsh Government, providing advice and ensuring that records are managed in compliance with legislation. Our team of information management experts and archivists is also responsible for the selection and appraisal of digital and paper records for transfer to the National Archives (TNA). Were expanding the team and are seeking an additional Discovery & Appraisal Officer to focus on the selection and appraisal of records.
Working alongside the existing Discovery & Appraisal Officer, your main role will be the selection and appraisal of paper and digital historic records and subsequent transfer of the records to TNA. Youll also be involved in compiling the annual Information Management Report, assisting with machinery of government change and other records retention projects., + Selection and appraisal of records for long-term preservation and liaison with The National Archives to arrange the records transfer.
+ Cataloguing and classification of paper and digital records in accordance with TNA standards.
+ Conducting sensitivity reviews and applying redaction in line with FOI, DPA & EIR exemptions.
+ Digital transfer of Welsh Government records.
+ Maintain guidance for transfer and retention processes.
+ Support records transfer as part of Machinery of Government change

1. A reserve list may be held for this opportunity. Any candidate who is successful in being offered a reserve status, will remain on the reserve list for 12 months.
2. A presentation on Making Effective Decisions will be required at interview. More information will be provided in the invitations to that stage.
3. The team is located across Wales. Whilst Welsh Government operates a hybrid working policy, the nature of this work will require office attendance in either Cardiff, Aberystwyth or Merthyr Tydfil at least three days a week.
4. Experience of working in records management, archives or libraries is essential. A degree or postgraduate qualification in information, records management, archives or a related discipline is desirable.

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:
+ Understands and can apply good records management practices and standards, including an understanding of relevant legislation.
+ Understands how to apply selection criteria to identify records for permanent preservation and the need for careful review when carrying out the appraisal and selection process (appraisal; cataloguing, sensitivity review; preparation for transfer)
