Full Job Description

Hertsmere Borough Council is seeking an Independent Member (IM) to join its Audit Committee, a vital component of our governance framework. The Committee ensures financial probity, monitors the auditing process, and reviews the Council's Risk Register. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your expertise and impartial perspective to enhance the Committee's work. About the Role As an IM, you will:

  • Participate fully in Committee discussions, providing a fresh, objective, and politically impartial viewpoint.
  • Review internal and external audit reports, monitor the implementation of recommendations, and contribute to the Council's financial governance.
  • The Committee meets 4-5 times per year at the Civic Offices in Borehamwood, with occasional training sessions. The role is non-voting but influential in shaping decisions. Training and support will be provided to the successful candidate.

    Have a local connection to the Hertsmere area (e.g., reside, work, or have demonstrable ties).
  • Agree to abide by the Members Code of Conduct and maintain confidentiality.
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest or information that could affect the Council's reputation.
  • You must not:
  • Be a member or officer of any council currently or within the past two years.
  • Be the spouse, civil partner, cohabiting partner or close relative of any member of the Council.
  • Have significant business dealings with the Council or be an active political party member.
  • Be an undischarged bankrupt.
  • Be in arrears with Council Tax or Business Rates or have or owe other debts to the Council
  • Have been convicted of a serious offence. (The Council has the right to carry out a DBS check).
  • Preferred Experience We are looking for candidates who have:
  • Senior-level experience in medium or large organisations.
  • Expertise in financial management, accountancy, or auditing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including negotiation and public speaking.
