Full Job Description

Responsible for co-ordinating the implementation of UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Neonatal Unit Standards at Chelsea & Westminster and West Middlesex sites in order to achieve BFI Neonatal accreditation, followingBFI Neonatal Unit Guidance. The purpose is to improve outcomes for babies and families' experience.

The standards are:
1. Support parents to have a close and loving relationship with their baby
2. Enable babies to receive breastmilk and to breastfeed when possible
3. Value parents as partners in care

Provide leadership and specialist advice in all aspects of infant feeding support, close parent-baby relationships and parents as partners in care, in collaboration with the multi-professional team and in line with local and national standards

Develop written policies and guidelines to support the BFI consultation with all stakeholders.

Update these in response to any new relevant information and audit results.

Develop a mechanism to ensure all clinical staff (doctors, nurses, nursery nurses, health care assistants) involved in the care of mothers and babies are orientated to the policy during their first week of employment

· Plan, deliver and evaluate education programmes to allow staff (doctors, nurses, nursery nurses, health care assistants, managers, students and others) to implement BFI standards according to their role.

· Develop a training curriculum for each staff education programme, based onBFI Guidance on writing a training curriculum which includes a range of teaching methods from individual 1:1 practical skills review sessions to self-directed learning and formal classroom based or virtual teaching.

· Develop a programme of annual updates to ensure staff knowledge and skills are maintained and to present any new information, informed by ongoing audit results.

Develop mechanisms to ensure that all relevant staff attend the education programme and maintain training records, · Plan, implement and evaluate regular BFI audits of staff knowledge and skills, mothers' experiences of care and the environment using the BFI neonatal audit tool.

· Ensure the collection and reporting of accurate data on

o use of mothers' own breastmilk

o use of all breastmilk

o use of breastmilk on discharge

o and any other relevant metrics

· Gather qualitative data related to parental experience and satisfaction.

· Report relevant data and audit results to management the Baby Friendly Guardian.

· Develop and review action plans in response to audit results and other sources of data, in collaboration with Steering Group and senior staff.

· Ensure data and action plans are widely shared and consulted on with all relevant staff.

· Provide Unicef UK with data as required for each stage of accreditation.

· Assist matrons to respond to complaints and clinical incidents relating to BFI standards.
