Full Job Description
The BGS IT & Security Team wish to recruit a Junior Information Security Analyst who will focus on cyber security provision for Windows endpoint devices, including the routine scanning and patching of laptop and desktop computers. The post will collaborate with the Information Security Officer and also work closely with the Service Desk and Desktop Team. The Junior Information Security Analyst will liaise across BGS to ensure the provision of effective cyber security aligned to the Cyber Essentials Plus certification scheme. This is an important role which is critical to the operation of BGS, ensuring secure access to data and services for BGS staff. The role includes responsibilities defined within the Information Security role group of the Government Security Profession career framework (see Government Security Profession career framework (publishing.service.gov.uk). Your key duties and responsibilities will include:
- Routine cyber security scans of Windows endpoint laptops and desktop computers.
- Analysis of cyber security scan reports and the application of patches and appropriate software updates in response.
- Contribution to the Cyber Essentials/Cyber Essentials Plus certification process.
- Contribution to the response to cyber security incidents, detection, mitigation and recovery.
- Continued personal/professional development through appropriate awareness and training.

The successful applicant will develop high levels of expertise and knowledge in cyber security and the Cyber Essentials Plus certification scheme. You will be highly motivated and technically competent in supporting Windows endpoint devices and a good communicator who is able to work well across a range of different specialist areas. We are looking for an early career professional with a good amount of relevant work experience, and we looking forward to seeing applications from anyone with a willingness to learn and develop themselves., - Experience of working in a demanding IT support function and time-critical customer service environment, e.g. a busy IT service desk (S&I)
- Some knowledge of cyber security provision with an understanding of Anti-Virus and Malware systems (S&I)
- Ability to work independently and be an integral part of the team (S&I)
- Flexibility to cope with and manage rapidly changing priorities (S&I)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills (S&I)
- You will be committed to a diverse and inclusive approach to work in the geosciences (S&I) Desirable
- Knowledge of Cyber Essentials standard (S&I)
- Knowledge of security threats and mitigation solutions, using policy-driven processes, software and hardware solutions (S&I)
- Some understanding of vulnerability assessment and remediation techniques (S&I)
