Full Job Description

This is a key leadership role within the Institute of Care Excellence for ensuring a strategic, standardised and supportive approach to the development of the NUH CNS workforce.

The post holder will work closely with the Assistant Directors of Nursing and the advanced practicelead in developing and implementing a strategic approach to the NUH CNS role including but not limited to role development, workforce planning, recruitment, retention, education and surrounding governance processes.

They will provide highly specialised, expert advice, education and consultancy regarding the CNS role. They will promote sharing of best practice and an organisational culture of learning and excellence.

Main duties of the job

Supporting the ADN and advanced practice lead the post holder will support divisional leadership teams in the strategic development of the CNS workforce to meet the nursing and midwifery strategy, trust vision and objectives of the NHS long term workforce plan.

As a senior lead within the Institute, they will support the development of the Institute and the implementation of the Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan.

  • NMC Registered nurse or midwife

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or closely Health related degree

  • Evidence of undertaking or completed Master's degree programme (Nursing or closely Health related)

  • Additional related clinical specialist qualification

  • Post registration teaching and assessing qualification

  • Evidence of undertaking leadership training

  • Evidence of recent CPD


  • Desirable
  • Additional related qualifications, Masters degree in relevant field or Masters level modules

  • Qualified PNA or experience in delivering clinical supervision

  • Recent experience at a senior leadership level including clinical practice experience in acute care and managing teams .

  • Current experience at a senior level including project management, change management, and multidisciplinary working

  • Experience of allocating funding / resources for CPD

  • Experience of leading strategic work in NHS / Integrated care systems

  • Evidence of leading projects across health and social care settings / clinical practice, teaching and research

  • Experience and understanding of key organisational, nursing and midwifery objectives and how this links to the Nursing and Midwifery strategic Plan

  • Experience in national / international networking and presenting to diverse audiences

  • Experience of planning and provision of education / development opportunities

  • Experience of facilitating change by collaborating with stakeholders

  • Experience in forming policy / guidelines
