Our new Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility. It acts as a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It offers a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK's CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace's UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK's Industrial strategy. Fuel your passion in making things fly by joining us at the cutting edge of the aviation industry and discover the future possibilities that await you.About The Role Placements in the GKN Additive Technologies and Optimised Metallic (ATOM) cluster are available for enthusiastic candidates seeking to develop knowledge and skill in developing new metallic manufacturing processes for the next generation of aircraft. We evaluate and develop various technologies such as Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing, Advanced Machining, Fabrication and Industry 4.0 technologies. We cultivate new processes for metallic materials & parts using Lasers, Electron Beams, and robots, as well as evaluate new technologies for manufacturing parts for future aircraft platforms. As a team we have on-site access to well-equipped laboratories for both manufacturing and evaluation. We explore whole value-stream manufacturing using metallographic analysis, mechanical testing, microscopy (Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy), and other methods through our extensive partner network. Typically you'll spend around 20-40% of your time hands on with manufacturing or laboratory equipment. Our internships will offer the opportunity to be involved with at least one of the following:-

  • Development of testing campaigns with research partners such as the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and The Welding Institute (TWI)
  • Design and manufacture using 3D Printing for Rapid Manufacturing & Tooling (Stratasys 900MC, eos Formiga P110 and various smaller printers)
  • Measurement and analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), mechanical testing rigs, metallographic sample preparation, optical microscopy & laser scanning.
  • Machining and finishing of samples using state of the art instrumented 5 axis CNC and high specification Wire EDM.
  • Development of knowledge on large scale robotic laser based Metallic 3d printing equipment
  • Manufacturing optimisation using lean methods or discrete event simulation
  • Joining technologies for metallic components (welding & bonding)
  • Development of metal forming processes (friction stir welding, modelling & process control)

    In order to be considered for one of these roles you will need to be studying towards a degree, or have completed your studies in one of the following subjects:
  • Materials Science / (Materials & Process (M&P), Manufacturing Engineering (ME), design and analysis
  • In addition have the following characteristics:
