Full Job Description

- Assist in the maintenance of the School's facilities, identifying defects and where possible, resolving or escalating in a timely manner using existing procedures.
- To ensure the availability, readiness and cleanliness of clinics, teaching, research, and general areas (e.g. gas supply, equipment and consumables).
- Provide support for student induction, including scheduling of inductions sessions, organisation and allocation of lockers, equipment, and any other items issued that may be required.
- Under the direction of the line management, to liaise with the appropriate University division or external sources to ensure continued cleanliness, security and maintenance of fabric, materials, fittings and fixtures in all areas of the School.
- Transfer and manually handle items, articles and substances throughout the School and on occasion, travelling to other areas within South Wales. Safety
- Report to and support line management of any identified failings and appropriate remedies within laboratories, clinics, offices and the School. Assisting with the completion and monitoring of Safety Inspection Actions.
- Contribute and help with the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Risk Assessments to be used across the School, continuously improving the documents and setting an example by working to them at all times.
- Ensure laboratories are maintained through cleaning and undertaking routine care of area, machinery and equipment, and undertaking stock control, ensuring adequate security and levels of stock are maintained and stock is distributed, as required, using existing methods.
- Assisting in providing adequate security control within the School, including issuance of keys and access card, and reporting unusual incidents.
- Assist with the assembling of equipment, as well as checking on satisfactory operation of the equipment (e.g. PAT Testing).
- To organise the School's clinical and hazardous waste disposal systems, liaising with Waste Carriers and stock control of waste receptacles.
- Work on own initiative using creativity to complete set tasks ensuring standard guidelines and procedures are adhered to, recognising when to refer a problem to others.
- Participate actively within the work team, setting an example and showing a flexible approach to delivering team results. General Duties

We are excited to be inviting applications for a self-motivated and enthusiastic Technician to join our School's Technical Team. You will play an important role in supporting our staff, assisting in day-to-day running of our eye-clinic, laboratories, and communal areas of our teaching and research activities. The role would suit someone who enjoys interacting with people, has some experience of maintaining equipment and of running commercial or research laboratories, is organised and comfortable with using various IT software packages. The role requires someone with a can-do attitude, has problem-solving skills, along with an ability to cover a broad range of tasks in a day, and work in a fast-paced environment., Qualifications and Education 1. NVQ 2/GCSE level A-C or equivalent qualification/work related experience. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 2. Experience in assembling, maintaining and repairing equipment. 3. Experience in working in technical or equivalent support role. 4. Ability to create and review standard facility processes, procedures and recommend improvements to the service provision, as appropriate. 5. A good level of general IT competence, including excellent working knowledge of recent versions of Microsoft Excel and Word. Customer Service, Communication and Team Working 6. A dependable individual, who is pro-active, adaptable, diplomatic with excellent communication skills, along with a willingness to contribute positively to the professional services of the School. 7. Evidence of working well as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary. 8. Ability to deal promptly, effectively and courteously with requests for information or service. Planning, Analysis and Problem solving 9. A sound approach to problem solving, with evidence of previous experience resolving a difficult situation either independently or with appropriate colleague support. 10. Ability to follow instructions but also to work on own initiative and unsupervised to deadlines, planning, organising and setting priorities for own work, as well as managing small projects, as appropriate., 1. A-levels or an equivalent qualification or equivalent work related experience 2. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment 3. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral

This position is open-ended, full time (35 hours per week) and is available immediately. Salary: £24,600 - £25,433 per annum (Grade 3). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.
