Full Job Description

Our Student Intervention Team facilitate the identification, investigation, and assessment of students where there is concern for wellbeing or disruptive behaviour. The team facilitate and monitor interventions for students who may be struggling emotionally or psychologically. The team also manages the Report and Support tool and handles disclosures of violence and abuse. We are seeking an experienced safeguarding and risk assessing practitioner to lead the team and play an active role in working with students and colleagues across the university, promoting confidence and empowering others to raise issues and support students appropriately. Engaging positively with subject matter experts including Cardiff and the Vale Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention steering group. Universities UK are currently developing a suicide and self-harm policy and you will be instrumental in ensuring our approach to safeguarding embodies these guidelines. The university is working with 3 other local universities alongside the NHS to embed a referral pathway and clear lines of communication. Developing and maturing partnerships with the NHS University Liaison Service will be imperative to embed them into the referral process. Alongside building on relationships with external agencies and services which will be particularly instrumental in securing these pathways to support outside the capability of the services offered by the University.,

  • Manage and lead the Student Intervention Team, ensuring departmental objectives are communicated and engaged with, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required
  • Manage and lead on Suicide Safer work ensuring objectives are communicated and engaged with, planning, organisation and appropriate delegation of work, monitoring progress and intervening as required. Work with the Student Support Intervention Team operational manager to promote, develop and embed the Report and Support tool into Health and Wellbeing services.
  • Contribute to the long term strategic planning and management of the Student Life department, interpreting school/directorate strategy to define and develop work priorities and setting standards
  • Contribute to the development of student health and wellbeing initiatives which have a University and community wide impact
  • Manage performance, induction and development of the team
  • Support and guide team members in welfare issues, escalating as necessary to specialist support areas
  • Ensure the delivery of the sections' service level agreements, adapting these according to changes in workload and the evolution of customer requirements
  • Collaborate with others in order to develop processes and procedures which de-escalate students presenting at risk and improve student wellbeing
  • Undertake the training of others in areas relating to the teams work
  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance competency and performance
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve confidence and service levels, developing appropriate communication links with the University's Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
  • Gather and analyse data to inform decisions, establishing basic trends and patterns in data and creating reports as appropriate

    1. Degree/NVQ 4 and equivalent Professional membership/experience, a relevant professional qualification in health or social care would be a distinct advantage., 2. Substantial experience of supporting people with welfare issues, preferably in higher education or comparable setting (e.g. nursing, social work, psychology, occupational therapy) or equivalent experience. 3. Specialist knowledge and experience of working with individuals presenting with mental health challenges including assessment, de-escalation and stabilisation of risk and onward referral to relevant and appropriate support. 4. Ability to develop new services, systems and procedures. Customer Service, Communication and Team Working 5. Ability to communicate detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people. 6. Substantial experience managing people and services, with capacity to balance multiple objectives and priorities. 7. Experience of dealing with performance, caseload allocation and welfare issues. 8. Evidence of ability to work with vulnerable people, exploring their needs and ensuring they receive appropriate support. Planning, Analysis and Problem solving 9. Proven experience in dealing with diverse and challenging problems, including investigation of issues and creating new solutions where no prior precedent exists. 10. Evidence of ability to plan the work of a section over year plus time scales, reacting to changes in workload and strategic direction of the Student Life department., 11. Postgraduate/Professional qualification/registration. 12. Experience of working in a Higher Education or healthcare environment. 13. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.

The post is full time, 35 hours per week, and open ended.
