Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen on Yew ward within our Specialist Low Secure Forensic Service for a Nurse Practitioner based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Yew ward is a 12 bedded male acute unit. The post holder will focus on reducing restrictive practices, improve patient care and support to improve overall quality on the ward. A main focus of the role is co-producing Positive Behavioural Support plans with service users to improve their experience and aid recovery., The post holder will work within a close team of other staff nurses and healthcare support workers on the ward to ensure safe running of the ward and patient centred care at all times. Duties for the post holder include (but not limited to): reducing restrictive practices, improving patient care, implementing Positive Behavioural support and implementing Safewards. Due to the nature of forensic mental health working, the post holder will be offered both managerial and clinical supervision to both registered nurses and healthcare support workers. To liaise and work closely within the multi-disciplinary team. Although this is not an operational role, there is an expectation the post holder will support colleagues, be a role model on the ward and expected to challenge any concerns or misconduct of colleagues should they arise. The post holder must be able to manage their time and workload effectively and whilst working within safer staffing numbers on the ward. Assessing risk as a huge part of being a forensic mental health nurse in all elements of the role such as: pre leave risk assessments, up to completing FACE and HCR-20 risk assessments. The post holder is required to work within safer staffing numbers, therefore required to work: long days, alternative weekend working, working night shifts (covering annual leave and staff shortages) and working bank holidays - including Christmas and new year.

The post holder must be approachable, reliable and supportive to both staff and patients alike. We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual who takes initiative with ideas of improving patient care and staff's experience. The post holder must be a role model to others on the ward. The post holder will be: professional, open minded and work well as part of both the ward based nursing team and wider multi-disciplinary team. Due to the nature of the unit, successful candidates will be confidential, provide person centred support and be able to care for someone in a non judgemental way. Due to Yew ward being a forensic ward, the post holder will require a good understanding of the 3 different types of security (physical, relational and procedural).
