Full Job Description

We are currently recruiting for an Interpreter (BSL) and Communication Support Worker, to use British Sign Language (BSL) and Sign Supported English (SSE) to provide interpreting and learning support for Deaf Students with additional needs. The position will also have responsibility for:

  • Provide signing support at an appropriate level in a range of situations. This will include working with Makaton, Sign Supported English and BSL, as appropriate to the setting, task and student preferences.
  • Work 1:1 to support the additional needs of Deaf learners impacting on learning, such as memory and cognition issues and language delay.
  • Provide 1:1 learning development work with Deaf learners, checking understanding and ensuring the learner has the necessary vocabulary knowledge and familiarity with concepts used in the lesson.
  • Facilitate and support use of technology to support learning and communication for the Deaf.
  • Support modification of handouts to ensure accessible language and using assistive visual formats.

    BSL qualification Level 3
  • Level 2 qualifications in numeracy and literacy
  • Experience of working in a learning environment
  • Experience of working with students with additional needs such as memory and cognition issues and / or language delay.
  • A strong understanding of the needs of Deaf students, the impact on learning and the support required to ensure progress and feelings of inclusion.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to communicate with Deaf young people.
